This is why I am just going to do all my own oil changes in my Tacoma. It's not worth the hassle to take it in and have to argue why you want it done before 10k miles, let alone the horror stories of minimum wage Joe messing up the oil change. Doing my first one on my Tacoma this weekend and I'm a bit nervous! Had the truck almost 4 months and just hit 1k miles on my baby.

It took me over 2yrs to go over 10K mi. I didn't get any service by choice from Toyota. I also didn't want them to note anything while doing their inspection in regards to my 3" lift, UCA, CMC, KDMax tune, etc.

What is the obsession with the free oil changes around here? My time is more valuable than the $35 you're saving.

This is just an agreement with others 5k or 1 year whichever comes first. If you like your truck and want it to hopefully run for many years change to oil regularly. I wash my truck every week (more during pollen season) and wax 2-4 times a year. Others never wash or wax, they don’t look at their truck as an investment and like it to look nice.

Actually I see no issues with 10k oil changes, unless your in the severe use range. Been doing our prius with 10k oci, and its been fine. Got well over 100k miles...doesn't touch a drop of oil. I did my tundra every 15k miles, and it never touched a drop either in the nearly 300k miles I owned it. You use a good synthetic, and you'll be fine.

Most dealerships are pretty cool about this stuff. Like if you get 2 free oil changes, and the book calls for 1 at 10k and 1 at 20k...they'll let you do two free services. If you so happen to bring it in at 1300 miles and 2200 miles, they just do it - and mark the first as (1 year/10k) and the second as (2 year/20k) - it is what it is. Then you're just out of your free services. I've never had an issue having any dealership do that to any of my vehicles before. The guy just wants to be blatantly unhelpful, is my opinion.

Edit: was reading through the thread and just because sometimes I like to hear myself talk. As for washing, I rarely wash the outside of mine. Maybe once a year if it's lucky. But the inside, I keep immaculate. At least once a month I do the full inside.

That makes total sense... Because you aren't at 10,000 miles yet. So if you want to change your oil now or at 5000 miles, simply just pay out of pocket now, then next time, when you are at 10,000 miles, have them cover it.

Just dropped mine off, they said they would do mine whenever I want. I still only get a total of two under the ToyotaCare but they don’t care when. Makes sense to me but was somewhat surprised. So evidently it’s not a ‘computer system’ issue preventing them from giving you the oil change early.

The night before picking up the new truck, I got a call from the salesman saying the truck has been detailed and everything was ready. Except the detailer had a little mishap and gouged the drivers side front fender flare when moving the truck. I know it's an ultra rare manual transmission and places where cars and trucks are the business, people don't need to know how to drive a manual. I asked them to supply a new flare and all associated hardware, and I would replace it myself. Which they did. I'm not quite ready for the first oil change, but I guarantee it won't be done at the dealer. I feel a bit sick thinking about how much clutch material I lost when the dealer was doing the pdi. I certainly won't be using the "free" oil changes. They cost too much.

I know it’s not 100% necessary, but if there are any metal shavings from its initial break in I want to get them out of the engine. After this 1k change I’ll do it every 5k indefinitely.

Fyi, the manual says to change the oil at 5K or 10K, depending on use. i fall into the 5K category and i suspect most owners do.

i took my truck to the dealer for the first oil change. i asked and the service advisor said they use mobil 1 from a bulk source.

i also asked if they would give me the oil and filter and he said no.

whatever oil they used it darkened pretty quickly, within the first 1000 miles. some TW members have commented that the oil darkening is not an indication it is bad or not doing its job. i dunno.

i have done every oil change since and do not use mobil 1. i use the toyota brand oil and it is only slightly dark at 5K miles. whatever the reason for the change in color between the two oils, i find interesting and wish i knew why.

I'd rather pay for my own oil to keep the dealer from touching my rig.

So I change my oil every 5K, and at 10K I had the dealership do the 10K service. They changed the oil and everything seemed fine......Well yesterday around 14,9XX miles I decided to change my oil. I attempted to take the oil filter cap / canister off, but it wouldn't budge. I had to use a breaker bar to get it off. The manual states 18ft lbs. for the oil filter cap / canister. They clearly put it on with who knows what. It was well over 70-80 lbs. torqued.

Holy crap 1k miles...your engine could be toast by then. That oil should have been changed within a 100 miles.

They did not. There is no room to tight to your estimated torque without cracking it.
Skipping to keep the ring moist is a probable cause
