The new emblem came; if I understand correctly, I should do the following to paint it:

    1. sand with a 100-fine sandpaper
    2. clean with something (I had vinegar in mind)
    3. apply primer, wait 24 hours
    4. apply paint

Is this the correct procedure? Thanks for the correction or confirmation.

    You're on the right track...

100 grit paper will be too aggressive. It will leave sand-scratches. I'm assuming you're using spray can primers, etc?

Sand it with some 5-600 grit paper, or even use a 3M scotch brite pad (red pad). Scuff the crap out of it. To clean it, you want a cleaner that will dissolve oils, so even dish-soap will work if you don't have any industrial cleaners (parts cleaner/acetone) on hand.

    Once clean, then sand it.
    Clean it again
Spray primer on it. (THIN COATS) -- Several thin coats of rattle-can primer
Rattle can primer dries FAST. you can apply 3-4 coats in under an hour. It'll be ready to sand shortly thereafter. No waiting 24 hours.
Once dry, scuff it again with your 3M pad lightly
Apply paint (again, LIGHT coats) 2-3 of them
    Clear if required.
    Done.

Why do you have to sand again after priming it? I'm waiting on my emblem to get here and want to paint it.

to my understanding, when u apply primer, it fills in deeper scratches.. when u lightly sand after primer it smoothens out the surface giving it a more 'flat' surface for your paint to stick on.

    For better adhesion.

If you spray directly on top of primer, you won't get as good adhesion when compared to sanding primer, then spraying. Plus, primer is very thick, and it can fish-eye, and look uneven. Sand it smooth, paint, and know your paint will stick, and look good.

A good cleaner to use for all painting projects is denatured alcohol. Soak a clean paper towel with it and wipe the surface off just before painting. It will evaporate in about 1 minute.

You can find it in the paint department at just about any hardware store or home improvements center.

It also works really well for removing adhesives let behind by decals, badges, etc.
