Hey everyone, I’m trying to get some info on whether or not it’s at all possible to totally swap the JBL system with a non JBL system and vice versa (as in one Tacoma to another). Asking because my dad has a 2021 SR5 with non JBL entune 3.0 and I have a 2016 TRD Sport with JBL entune 2.0. Strangely enough, he wants to swap back to his old HU (entune 2.0) and I would honestly rather have Apple CarPlay Personally I could care less about having the JBL system.

Wondering if I could totally just install my HU, speakers, amp and subwoofer into his truck and install his system into mine.

I’ve tried to research it, but can’t find anything specifically on this. I know the amp has to be model year specific, and if I were to just swap my HU, the amp would need updating as well as adding an adapter.

I know it’s a long shot, but hey, why not ask? ‍♂️

    Any help/info is appreciated!!

Did you do a search in the forums for this? I don't know the answer, but pretty sure I read about others doing this maybe 4mo ago.
You can also use Google to search the internet "Entune 3.0 backwards compatible"

I'm pretty sure that you would have to change wiring harnesses and stuff like that too. That would be a giant PITA

like for the entire system? Quite honestly if changing some harnesses is the only pain, I’m okay with that.

Yeah I’ve been searching for days, but can’t find anything related to what I want to do. But it’s quite possible I might have skimmed over it. I’ll def google that, thanks for your input!

Speaker impedance is too. Many wanted to try in 2020 when the new radios came out.

Keep Entune 2.0, it's better than v3 IMO.

Duly noted. I had 3.0 in my ‘18 Camry XSE and I didn’t mind it. I really just want CarPlay for more ease of use. Playing around with the idea of just installing an aftermarket unit instead. I’m just not too sure about what’s A) reliable B) compatible with JBL-equipped system C) not sooooo expensive.

The labor involved with ripping the truck apart to run power/speaker wires for the amp/sub in your truck isn’t worth it just to get airplay imho. Especially since people seem to hate on the Jbl audio quality and make it seem like upgrading is a MUST.
The A/V section here will have everything you ever wanted to know about headunits and you will have an easier time going aftermarket since you don’t have JBL.
Only limit is your budget. Some people love joying brand. It seems like a mixed bag to me but they are cheaper than the other big name headunits

You can put an Aftermarket in or a 2020+ Entune 3.0 Non JBL with the davesea harness to get CP and AA

So even though my truck is equipped with JBL I can just install the 2020+ NON JBL HU with that harness and have no compatibility issues? Would I still need to replace the amp with the corresponding model year of the HU?

No. I thought you had the non jbl. You can get a JBL 3.0 unit and the davesa harness then

The factory CarPlay units suck. You aren’t missing anything. I’d say you should go aftermarket and then let your dad use the other one from your truck. Maybe dad could chip in some $ to help you get to the aftermarket setup.

oh I wish lol but anyway, it’s prob what I’m going to end up doing. Toyota certainly lacks in the infotainment department. So behind…

Any suggestions on a good aftermarket unit?

Yeah I hear ya. I’ve had a Kenwood since 2020 which I ran in two frontiers and now my Tacoma. I thought I was going to sell it, I was so pumped that my new Tacoma had factory CarPlay. Turned out terribly, so I said screw it and threw in the Kenwood. Had to buy about $300 worth of Tacoma specific goodies to get it installed. It was nice putting the radio to use at least.

I have the DMX957XR, I believe it has now been replaced by the DMX958XR. I also use a Maestro RR2 which I really like, as well as the specific Maestro HRN harness for my year and a few other adapter parts. I really like my setup. Steering controls are programmable with two functions per button (click vs hold) and the Maestro allows me to see vehicle gauges on the screen as well as read and clear codes.

OEM Head Units tend to have many compromises compared to Aftermarket units.

Before you kill off your stock Head Unit, specially if you have and use Android Auto (I cannot speak for Apple CarPlay), try using a music program like Spotify, and further, try playing a track from Dark Side of the Moon, or some other Alan Parson's Project track (Alan was the engineer on Dark Side of the Moon and he's known for establishing a great audio field with high dynamic range).

You'll find with a superior audio source, your system will not be as disagreeable as it seems now.

If you're listening to AM / FM / or SirusXM, please, the audio quality is not going to be nearly as good as what was previously mentioned. Try it!

Can you do better? Sure - it's all a matter of cost.

Remember, the truck cabin isn't your best listening environment. You may also be very surprised installing sound deadening matt material in the doors, and yes, behind the back seats. They are essentially big resonators of noise coupled through the tires to the road.
