Such low miles it's 99.99% ok.

Still annoying, and it happens more often then shops would like to admit.

It's from doing 30 oil changes all day, you lose focus.

I posted because I was curious mostly... I worked on cars for a living for about 25 years, I still do industrial mechanic stuff now so I've seen a fair bit. That's why I'm not really concerned... I wanted to hear from folks more knowledgeable than me in this platform...

Yep... it seems to happen a bit more than I expected on engines with canister filters, not just Tacos... at least from the googling I did today...

You're likely fine, but that is a bad move. I'd ask for an extended warranty of some sort. Even if they keep it limited to the engine with some sort of deductible, it is better than nothing.

    Yeah.
Well, you could always send a sample at your next oil change if you care to. It's likely just fine.

It should be fine. The bypass valve built into the filter cap opens quite often before the oil reaches operating temp, because oil is orders of magnitude more viscous when cold. Someone doing mostly short trips less than 20 minutes long would be driving with effectively unfiltered oil most of the time.

It's the dealer's fault, not Toyota's, though. There's now a paper trail for Toyota corporate to deny powertrain warranty coverage for lubrication-related issues if they choose to do it. That leave you exposed to a couple of known potential issues with the 2GR: cyl #3 burnt valve and timing cover leak, both are engine-out jobs with 4-figure repair costs.

My oil changes at 4k mile intervals showed the filter was still super clean, yellow in color (just a little darker). I wouldn't sweat it personally.

+1 on the sample and go from there if need be.

As much as everyone likes to demand stuff from dealerships, most won't go out of their way to help. An oil sample showing excessive wear/metal content will help persuade them but just demanding this and that will likely just get you a free oil change with them and we all know how that went... Save the stress, test the oil and go from there.

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.

lol if you think a “highly trained” tech is doing oil changes you have a rude awakening coming.

Many of them are just lot techs graduated to “lube techs”

I think what everyone is missing here is that someone actually took ownership of a fuck up and admitted that they did something wrong. I find that almost incredulous in this day and age of pass the buck/cover your ass. Highly skilled or not they were honest.

Every time I consider the dealer for an oil change for convenience I see crap like this.....Some schmuck at the dealer can't even do a basic oil change. If it isn't this, its forgot the oil cap, wrong oil, loose drain plug, wrong oil, no oil, improperly installed skid plate. I'll do my own, thank you.

Just have dealer you bought it flush engine with garden hose. Then throw some sea foam in it.

    Only miles will tell.

My neighbors son, first day after high school graduation, never so much as held a screwdriver in his hand in the entirety of his life
got a job at the local Mazda dealership as 'head-oil-changer'.... so there ya have it....

^Admittedly I never had to use a screwdriver for oil changes until I got a Toyota - damn OE drain plug gasket always sticks. Then with turd gen you have to replace the O-ring on the filter cap.

You're probably just fine. That said - I do like the idea a lot of asking nicely for some type of extended powertrain warranty to be applied to the vehicle, at zero cost to you. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't oblige this completely sensible request.
