What is normal for one is completely different for another. Now, here is an example of short 13 mile trip home one night driving under the speed limit (watching for deer). I routinely get 23mpg on a tank and yes, I mostly drive like a grandpa. Filled up this morning and got 22.113 mpg.30.3.jpg 6480.jpg but, I towed a load to the scrap yard (42mile round trip ) with a gross weight of everything at 6480lbs.

Thats bs with my truck. 87 or 89 delivers the same fuel mileage, and best performance. I've check this a few times and it's always the same. If I drive at 55, or a little higher I can get 23 mpg unloaded. Anything more, and fuel economy with drop a couple tenths. This is only during the summer months. Wintertime its always around 19 mpg, or a little less.

mine knocks like crazy on 87. pulls so much timing it loses a ton of power. recently went back to 87 for a long trip and my truck has been driving like absolute shit.

I have done the math and found the “dash claim” to be spot on every time.

I used to argue the same thing vehemently, then did some research. Due to the ability of modern engines knock sensors to alter timing, using high octane fuel allows the timing to be advanced multiple times per second on the fly. Actual measured output increases at the same throttle setting, thereby allowing an engine to use less fuel to create the same hp required to maintain a given road speed. Not all engines benefit in terms of mileage or power.

It is also hard to argue with this controlled experiment.

I had a 2006 Nissan Xterra that consistently got 19-20 mpg. 17 years later, my completely stock 2023 TRD Pro 6MT gets 17-18. So much for advances in technology. It has 2,576 miles, so perhaps it will improve a little with a bit more break-in. I do love the truck and can live with the MPG. I’m just a bit surprised that no improvements were made in 17 years.

It's only spot on if you do long trips. Short trips not so much.

I always uses 91 octane on mine. I believe this will reduce the carbon buildup over time on the throttle body. I've had experience with 87 and I've had to clean the throttle body around 60-70k. First I brought it a dealer and they wanted to replace the throttle body. I found a trick to clean it myself. Now i only use 91 in all my cars and i've yet to clean the throttle body, but if build up occurs I can clean it myself. Also it helps a little with performance. Anyone else have had carbon buildup? How did you resolve it?

i don't think it will do anything to reduce carbon buildup but it does make a significant difference in degrees of timing advance which results in better power and less gear-hunting.

Only really valid if you can repeat the results going the opposite direction. Anyone can coast down hill, but slipstreaming behind a semi going uphill, well that's a different story.

If carbon build up is an issue then, the question is would it be is it less expensive to duplicate the cleaning every so often, verse running the more expensive 91 grade gasoline ?
