You always can take one for the team and apply 70-80 lbs and report back.
I have been doing own oil changes on 2 cars w/cartridge for awhile and the cartridge does not come easy even though I torqued it to specs and lubed the o-ring

My original post was to let TW my personal experience, just beware when you get your vehicle back to check the torque specs.

Yeah I know it’s overkill, but why not? Now that I’m done with the break in period I’ll change it every 5k from here on out.

Even at 5k with a good filter, and synthetic oil like mobil1, it's unnecessary to do oil changes at that interval, unless you like burning dollar bills. I've already been through 15k mile oil changes on my tundra in the past, and 10k on our current prius...both engines are still running fine....the tundra with another owner with over 300k miles on it, and our prius with well over 100k miles. Neither touch a drop of oil.

Two things in life that are certain, death and taxes.

Oops, actually three things. More posts on why your oil change frequency is best and everyone different is an idiot. (Not directed at anyone specific, all of us, including me!)

When I had my first oil change at the dealer, I took the skid plate off myself and left it home. When I got back, I checked the torque on the canister, drain plug and lug nuts. I put the skid plate back on to make sure no bolts were cross threated and stripped. Just a thought.

Do it yourself. There's no such thing as a "free" oil change! Peace of mind? Priceless!!

Depends on the dealer and their techs. They do impeccable work here, but so are their rates. $160 for an oil change on my tacoma to me is a bit excessive. I trust them, but not at that cost.

For those who are changing your own oil, remember you can self-report any service in the ‘maintenance’ section in the Toyota app. This way you will have a record that chronologically populates your svc or any independent svc with the dealer work in your service history.

I did this for my 2011 then Toyota Corp IT deleted all my records. I should of just written it down in the owners manual!

I did my oil changes on my own between the Toyota care services that did not include an oil change. I did my first oil change at 6 months and 4500 miles.
@ 5,000 15,000 and 25,000 miles they only do a tire rotation and maintenance check up
@ 10,000 & 20,000 they add an oil change and at the 20,000 mile service Hanover Toyota also changed my cabin air filter and charged me $16 for the filter, they said checking it and changing it if needed was part of the service.

I did not get to use the 25,000 mile service since I was just under 20,000 miles in July 2022 when my 2 years of toyota care expired.

I record my maintenance on the toyota app, on Carfax and in a Maintenance Journal I bought on Amazon.
I'm told dealers can see self entered records I'd love confirmation of that. I know that with carfax they delete owner entered information when you remove the vin from your carfax account.

The first oil change is the most important! I had mine changed at 5K also - paid for it myself. The first few thousand miles, the engine breaks in and debris will get flushed into the oil and filter. No idea why Toyota waits till 10K for the initial oil and filter change. Also, 6 months is a significant time with the conditions the initiator of the thread mentions. Temperature differences in high humidity do produce condensation and you will have traces of water in the engine system. Regular oil changes are the key to a long-lasting engine - and 5K is a prudent interval I will always maintain.

Question, if you believe that there are debris floating in the oil, why don't you change the oil before 5k?

The oil has a certain capacity to bind and carry debris and particles from bearings, bushings, cylinder barrels, rings, etc. but also from combustion gases passing by the rings, as so does the filter have the capacity to contain particles and debris without reducing oil flow.
Unfortunately, the mechanics at Toyota take the old filter and throw it away, don't do an inspection if and which debris is found in the oil filter. I was amazed to see how much debris, ferrous and non-ferrous, was caught in my aircraft piston engine filters - and that is normal and they operate at up to 2700RPM only.
From oil analysis of my plane I could clearly see the high number of contaminants in the oil after the first 25h vs the number of contaminants at 50h and 100h after engine work - they were each time a lot lower than the previous one. Oil analysis is a good indicator which part of the engine is wearing out and will fail sometime.
Oil and oil filter change before 5K with full synthetic oil seems unreasonable for afore mentioned reasons. 10K is quite a long time for the health of the oil. Molecule chains break, the oil gets particle laden - hence the change of color and viscosity.
I stick to 5K, everybody is free to determine their own intervals they feel best for their engine.
Btw, that is also why I stick to the good old drain screw - it lets all the gunk flow out of the engine when removed during oil change. Quick drains do not because they are screwed too far into the oil pan, creating a flow barrier. Gunk and debris remain in the oil pan.

I know the theory and i did my due diligence and cut up the filter on my 2022 toyota at 3k. There were no debris...
I'm just confused why would you mention debris and yet going to 5k. Per you logic, you should drained at least half way to "prolong the engine life".
I flew cessna's.. you cant compare those Lycomings to modern auto engines

I remember doing my 1st oil change on my 2001 tundra after the first 7500 miles. No metal of any sort in the oil, or filter. I had figured these engines must be spotless when assembled, or already broken in with some sort of a break-in oil before shipped to the dealer.

I put on a TRD Pro skid plate with the filter trap door, and a fumoto valve. Changed it first time at 1100 miles. Everything looked clean; no fines that I read could be there. Plan to do it every 5k miles/ 6 months myself. Now that I'm set-up for easy changes s/b a piece of cake. I don't trust a dealer and will likely never take it to one. I'll pay the local tire shop to rotate tires every 5k rather than trust a newbie in the express lane at Toyota.
