I work night shift and on the way home a deer tried to cross the road. It came across the yellow line and I was doing about 55 mph. It was a little foggy last night I didn't see it until the last second. I SLAMMED the breaks and swerved and avoided the deer by mere inches. Luckily I didn't hit the deer and damage my truck but when I slammed the breaks I could hear the rear tires lock up a little bit. Could this cause any mechanical issues? Hopefully I didn't get flat spots in my tires or mess up the breaks pads or rotors. I know the rear has drum brakes.

Fun fact about deer ... if you see one deer at night there is usually at least one more waiting to follow the first ... my experience at least.

Nah one hard panic brake isn't going to be an issue for you.

I grew up on 50 acres and hunt deer every fall. I've shot a bunch of them. I'm no stranger to deer but can't imagine slamming my breaks is healthy for the truck lol

Consider the general class of people they designed the truck for, then apply a proper safety factor to the design. :)

What will really get your attention is going along at 50 mph on a snowmobile, and having a pissed off moose jump on the trail coming at you.

I've seen turkeys running dirt bikes through the woods, but never like that. Surprised a large black bear crossing a grass woods road once, and have had turkey's fly across my tundras windsheild more than once. Even got a closeup ass end view of deer at less than a yard away from my snowmobile riding an old railroad bed before it hopped off the side of it.

Never swerve to miss a deer. Too many people swerve for the set and impact a tree or roll in the ditch

Politely disagree. You should respond to first danger/risk......first.

    Oh Dear.
Seriously if you think your brakes can’t handle that you should ride with me sometime.
Your tires will be fine too, I’m glad you avoided a collision.

Agreed, but I believe there is a tightrope of a middle ground, risk vs reward sort of thing, and I believe this can assessed in a split second, which I think is what you’re referring to. And to the other guy, if someone can swerve in a controlled and safe manner, have at it.
A deer recently jumped out in front of my vehicle when I was going 50 mph, no time to react responsibly, could have swerved, at the detriment of others on the road, could have braked too, also at the detriment of those behind me, hit the deer at full force, in a straight line, didn’t even flinch the wheel and drove onto the shoulder in a controlled manner. Truck was fudged but no one was hurt. Definitely a win. Biggest take away I think is to be aware of others on the road and formulate that into what you’re capable of doing in the moment.

And then I installed an ARB so I’ll never deal with this shit again.

*haven’t filled in the bumper, upper lip trim piece yet obviously (required for the 2.5 gens), will get to it in time.

How you react is instinctual. some swerve, most will just hit it having never realized what was happening before their eyes.

ABS did what ABS does: stop your car safely and make an awful sound that makes you wonder what died.

    You're fine.
