Downshifting rough

Hey guys I've been noticing lately that my transmission is downshifting a little bit rough like downshifting with a manual ( not that hard but weird)and sometimes upshifting I can feel a kick. I'd like to know about any other experiences and possible issues, thanks

 

Year, miles, trans been serviced?

Transmission is likely spoiled. You need to work these trucks so they don't get cranky. I tow a trailer to the dump with mine at least once a month, and a snowmobile up north during the winter. Then again its Friday.

 

You got a good point, I have other cars so I wasn't driving it that much in almost 3years, yeah I know is Friday, thanks

 

Is it colder weather where you live?

 

If you are a DIY’r I’d simply perform a drain and refill. 4 quarts/ $50 and you likely have solved the problem.

Low level from factory?

 

Check the fluid level with the temperature sensor check, and also check your u-joints for signs of play (will need to elevate the rear end free of the ground with the parking brake off). A failed ujoint could be allowing the slop to be taken up and bounce, giving you the kick sensation.

 

Mine has basically done this when cold from the factory. Look up the rear u joints. Plenty of info on greasing it to make it stop

 

Possibly but probably not. My thought is simply try the easy and inexpensive thing that might cure the issue but also is good for your truck.

 

Get a tune. Just had mine tuned, remarkable difference. I had OTT, installed. Heard KD Maxx is comparable.

 

Does it happen across all gear ranges, or just certain ones?

How do you know it's a gear shift and not torque converter clutch engagement/release?

Do you use D? Does it occur in any of the S-modes? Does ECT have any effect?

 

It happens just randomly not always, I always drive on D, almost never ECT.
I don't know what it is, it can be the torque coverter

 

Kind of a bummer when these 2020 tacomas have no zerks for any u-joints.

 

I get something like this as well (2023, 600km), I noticed it when trying to come to a controlled, slow stop at around 46-48kph it downshifts and kicks the revs up when braking. Its not a jarring thing, but enough that you definitely feel it and makes it almost impossible to come to a completely smooth stop. Also does the same at around I think 20ish kph. Is that similar to your issue?
