Looking to do some overlanding / camping with my taco and wondering what mods y’all would consider essential prior to a first go. Thinking bare minimums here.

For reference, I have a 2022 SR5 that’s pretty much stock, minus the predator package and some all terrain tires. So no armor, no lift, no recovery gear.

Looking at method 305 race wheels, Cali Raised sliders, CBI skid plates, C4 front bumper, CBI bed rack, and potentially an Ironman lift kit to hold it all up. Obviously can’t afford all this to start, but looking to rip as quickly as I can. Any recommendations for where to start with these products, or any others would be epic. Thanks

I mean most of overlanders just drive a quarter of a mile down a gravel road to take some Instagram shots of their ridiculously hot girlfriend bending over and unpacking things from their truck so I don’t think you need any off-road mods at all.

    Still thinking about it.
Since you asked... I recommend experiencing just how much you can do in stock form. Throw your gear in the bed.

    Mods?

Why do you need mods...you're going camping.

No overlanding unless you're in Australia or something.

Welcome to TW. I think people often forget how capable these trucks are right off the dealership floor. Unless you plan on doing some serious rock crawling or doing very technical trails, dare I suggest you try "overlanding" stock and then decide what you need?

Throw some camping gear in the bed and go. A stock truck will take you many places.

Figure out where all the recovery points are, buy a grade 8 bolt and wingnut for the factory rear hitch as a last-ditch rear-center pulling point, and bring a set of V-bar chains for two tires, an air compressor and a shovel (and pick if the ground is typically rocky). A tow strap or 3 is never a bad idea (different lengths) and some sort of come-along.

Then go get stuck somewhere in 2wd.

Figure out if airing down the rear tires and shifting your cargo load can get you unstuck.

    Then go get stuck again.

Then try ti get stuck and see if just throwing it in 4wd is enough to get out.

IME, 4wd and lockers excel at helping you get stuck further out than you would get otherwise if you start using them from the first foot off pavement.

I noticed this for like 90% of outdoor videos on youtube... They drive there, then is shots of them unpacking, then they cook, 30 seconds of scenery, then back to cooking and eating, then its bed time.

an air compressor, so you can fill up, after reducing tire pressure.

Man, stock taco will Impress you trust me. A lot of guys that have all this steel bolted to their truck don’t even use it. Don’t fall into this hype that you need 600 pounds of armor just to get to a campsite that a Honda civic can get to.

Go out and explore, then see what you need. You already got AT tires so get out there. Bring a shovel and recover strap!:)

This is such a broad question that only you will be able to answer. Start local at a campground. See what you use and what you don't use. Then build out accordingly. I found that more spare parts and tools is much more of a necessity to me than 7 additional gallons of water. You may need more water and less parts...its all about where you want to go, how long and how much terrain you want to see before heading back to civilization.

Oh, and rotopax. You need rotopax to flex.

It would be the same if I were doing it honestly. Who really wants to spend time filming any more than necessary?
