Temptation for me with the cost of gas… feels like the cost will continue to only go up.

The math doesn’t work out if the goal is to save money. Even with my cheap preorder price it takes a bit to even break even.

I doubt if the utility company is going to break even running Rivians vs what ever fleet price they pay for a $30k retail Ranger, and they supply their own electricity.

I’m not trying to save money… it’s a higher quality of car. Just saying if gas continues to price upwards I look at my Tacoma ownership over 5 years. What’s the cost of the truck, insurance, gas/energy, and my personal impact to the environment, etc… all factors into how I value my truck.

I’m not saying the Rivian is going to be the best price but it may become a better value despite being more in the future if oil prices continue their macro trend and governments look to implement larger taxes/fines for their secondary cost to our air and environment.

EV prices are high for most but the pricing they are now won't be that way forever.

Agreed, it’ll get interesting as F150 lightning, rumored electric Tacoma and other product hit the market to compete for those like us in this forum.

If we’re talking product “value” and intent. I’d compare the Rivian to a Range Rover before I compared it to Tacoma… it’s for the people buying to define their lifestyle vs a Tacoma is much more about value/reliability.

Both are valid… but I’m not shocked in a forum of aligned product buyers and DIYers… many would rather their moded and unique SR5 over a Rivian because it brings them specifically more value.

Or you could just stop and charge in Rawlins, Wyoming

I have run a lot of routes using Abrp and I will admit Wyoming was pretty scary for ev driving.

With the distances between chargers in Wyoming you need to charge to nearly 100% SOC to make it.

My brother-in-law’s dad is in Nebraska and he was asking me about it yesterday. He wants to do in in their R1S, from Portland, Oregon. You are stuck driving through Wyoming on the route.

Driver error. (Per the article I read)

There is a rule in Baja, if you have a chance to buy fuel, buy it. Whether you need it or not. Same would apply to EVs to recharge in certain states.
