Are you sure you're not confusing them with Amish ? (some of them are very... insular).
Mennonites run the spectrum from Old Order (horse and buggy) to ones you'd have trouble telling from regular folk.
The ones around here are mostly farmers, but they have fridges and cars


We had Amish hired hands on the farm.
Young, unmarried ones with no land... yet.

Hey Uncle @Gritto , something is going down with the Natural gas industry up here. Remember the compressor station in Wyalusing, Pa that was gonna compress natural gas into LnG and transport by rail and truck? They were sued by environmental groups and they turned in their permit voluntarily and everyone thought it was a done deal. The permit expired and they recently applied for an extension that was denied and the sierra club is touting it as a big win. Now stay with me because here is part 2. There are huge parcels of undeveloped land along route 315 that developers submitted plans to build a huge warehouse on. The people rallied and put a stop to it. (I think it was a diversion) while everyone was focused on that fight, contractors came and tore out a natural rock formation that acted as a berm, opening it up about 30 feet wide…directly across the road from the proposed warehouse site. This is in a dangerous spot on a busy highway that isn’t lanes for any turns. PennDot put in electronic signs warning of heave truck traffic and it was on. These people moved in heavy excavators dump trucks, pickup trucks, school busses with blacked out windows, office trailers etc.
All night and day, every day, lowboys coming in to drop off more. This is a massive undertaking and not one peep from the news aboot it. My take is that they are going to start laying a pipeline from the proposed compressor station all the way to the port in Gibbstown, NJ. They are bypassing the truck and rail plan. People say that they need to secure right of ways and it will take years and years of court battles. They already have that figured out. They are going to run the pipeline right along the existing power lines. I looked up the contractor’s name that is on all of the equipment and here it is. Okay, I happen to know a good deal about this.
Amish and Mennonites derive in the most part from 16th-17th century German Anabaptists.
Mostly peasants.
They came here to escape the frequent wars (and recruiting sergeants).

There's one more offshoot (apart from smallish splinter sects), from which my paternal side of the family came.
That's the Brethren Church and the closely linked Church of the Brethren.
Fully modern, but (mostly) Pacifists, like the Amish and Mennonites.

It caused a bit of a stir in the church when my Dad joined the Army Air Corps (predecessor to the Army Air Force and Air Force) in 1942.
He served as a B-24 bomber pilot, as some of you here already know.
Of his two brothers, one served in the Navy and the other claimed conscientious objector status and served in the BVS (Brethren Volunteer Service).

Personal violence is never condoned, particularly against women.

 

Yep, ive been around them. Both are similar though. Mennonites are Amish lite...

Try getting any woman today thats not Amish or a mennonite to wear little house on prarie dress every day all year...good luck with that. And Thats just the dress code...not to say that alone is mistreatment but any more will get me on a political rant.
