Starting issue 21 Tacoma

My step son stopped over today to drop off our grand daughter. I wanted to show him the new HU I just installed. Jumped in the truck pressed the brake pedal and pushed the start button. All normal lights came on on the dash and nothing. No cranking no nothing. One thing I did notice I had a check engine light on. I did check the Trouble codes and nothing.

Last time I drove the truck was last Wednesday. The new HU was already installed and functioning.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the issue is? Is there a fuse I can check for the issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Battery drain. Disconnect wherever you touched and figure out your wiring issue.
You don't have a starting problem, you have a mod problem.

The CEL was on because the engine wasn't running, not necessarily because there's an issue.

Did you attempt to start it again or did you leave it after the first attempt? Regardless, like others said, check the battery. Low hanging fruit and all.

 

Drove the truck after I installed the HU. Even stopped to fill it up. No issues. Battery is showing me 12.1 volts. If the battery was low I would at least have a clicking noise tryin to start it. Now if I try to start it I get nothing.

Going to check some fuses in the morning.

12.1 v is too low, should be 12.5 or higher.

 

12.6v is ideal; swap the battery out.

 

Found the issue, I tested the AM2 No. 1 30 amp fuses in the fuse box in the engine bay and got no reading. Swapped the with another 30 amp fuse that tested good and the truck started.

my step son sent me this you tube video to help me troubleshoot the issue. The first JK fuse he mentioned was one that I didn’t get a reading on.

Just ordered replacement fuses this morning.

 

Just out of curiosity did you disconnect the negative battery terminal to do the HU install?

 

I don’t think so. But I drove the truck after I installed it. That’s the confusing part about it.

 

FWIW - 12.1V is essentially a battery that is about 50% discharged, believe it or not.
You may or may not get the starter to turn the engine over.
When the battery is under charge by the alternator, you should expect to read something like 13.7, 13.8 volts... if not you have a battery or alternator issue.

You still may have an intermittent short. Why did the fuse blow? Very possible you grounded something out during the swap.
Keep an eye on it for a while.
