Just to summarize the line of thinking here for anyone interested:

1) The European Union needs LNG (liquid natural gas) to replace Russian gas... and they need it now.
The Germans have pulled off something of a miracle in building LNG re-gasification terminals in less than a year.
Four terminals so far, last time I read.

2) The Marcellus Shale formation, centered on Pennsylvania and neighboring states has proven reserves (as of 2015) of 147.8 trillion cubic feet of NG.
That's trillion with a T.
Undiscovered reserves are estimated at up to 363 trillion.



3) The US gov't has committed to a major effort to supply the EU with LNG.
Existing infrastructure is inadequate.

4) How to do this in a timely manner?
We've seen the delays in pipeline construction in the past... lawsuits, permitting, etc.
Road and/ or rail transport ain't gonna cut it.

It seems likely that, as per above, they're laying a pipeline on existing utility rights-of-way, thus simplifying the permitting.
The old method of trenching and backfilling would be too disruptive.
This can only mean HDD (horizontal directional drilling) to lay the pipeline.

4) Export to the EU.
As mentioned above, the likely site for the LNG terminal is in Gibbstown, NJ, whence the LNG it can be loaded on LNG tankers.
But the latest news only indicates the proposed LNG plant is snarled up in permitting and court challenges.


I have a suspicion though that if the Feds are determined enough about this, it's gonna get done
