Remind me what are the big 6?
    LA, NY, Chicago, Boston...

Congrats on Chicago. I feel like COVID really started turning these big races into lottery nightmares. Back when I did my marathon there was no lottery.

Add an ultra to your bucket list. I promise they are much more fun :)
CA has a lot of gorgeous trail races.

    You can do it lol.
If you can walk to your car after a marathon you can run an ultra.

Ultras are more fun because they are laid back and chill. And aid stations are buffets of food and drinks. Get tired you get to chill and hike and talk to the person next to you for an hour.

I ran one road marathon. I really have no desire to do it again.

What is a good pair of weightlifting gloves?

I have Harbinger gloves with wrist wrap but they keep coming apart.

I'm an old guy in my early 60s, who was very active and slim before my bout of plantar fasciitis about 20 years ago. I just got back into running this past November.

    My weight update:

    240 lbs - November 5th
230 lbs - November 21st (thanks to a bit of water weight loss...lol)
    220 lbs - December 17th
    210 lbs - January 25th
    200 lbs - February 25th

Currently sitting at 198, but I'm going for ~185, then I'll reevaluate how much more I need to drop. I think that's a good weight for me, but if I still have excess fat around the middle, will keep going a little further.

I'm doing an 8K race in a couple weeks, so my running update:
The first time I ran 3 miles without stopping was November 11th, and I ran a blazing 43:53...lol
I ran 5 miles for the first time last Monday, and I ran a 48:23. My goal is to run the 8K in under 50 minutes, so <10 per mile for 5 miles. I think I'm there.

I do a "long run" (5 miles) on Monday and do a 5K three more days (usually Tuesday through Thursday), then walk on Saturday and Sunday to rest up for the following Monday. Once the 8K is behind me, I'll probably drop to just running 3 days per week, and mix in going to the gym and riding my bike on non-run days.

I thought about doing a half next year, but not sure if my old knees can take the training. I started to feel the wear and tear when I was running 5 days/week.

But for now, I'll keep my current diet and run schedule until I hit my goals...wish me luck!

    Congrats on the weight loss!

In terms of joint wear and tear just curious if you run most of your runs nice and easy and keep the HR low.

As much as I have run I have not felt running was hard on my joints except when I was new to it and just out ran my abilities and over did it. Once my form improved and I trained better I was fine.

I live 338 miles from the destillary that makes this bourbon.

Little did I know you have to vacation 1,207 miles from the destillary in order to score a bottle.

I am about 75% back, going down hill on uneven surfaces still a challenge but I did deadlift the other day and spent a week on vacation doing an average of 20k steps a day. And I didn't get fat when I was off my feet for 3 months #winning

I am in my 60's and have been running steady for 30+ years. My only issues are lower back and neck, both of which may or may not be from the running miles. Never had knee or any other joint issues. I run half marathon(s) every year.

I know you are not running a lot of total miles in a week, but my opinion is that 5 days a week is too frequent, especially since you are admittedly overweight and your body is adapting to the running. I'd target 20-25 miles spread over 3-4 days for now. I'd mix in days of weights and stretching. Light squats and anything lower back, such as hyperextesnsion machince or free weight simulation of that low back conditioning. Maybe some calf raises too.

My main problem after all those miles is my heart rate has gotten down into the 40-45 BPM range. I have some bouts of "skipped beats". Just had my annual physical (HR=40BPM) this week and Dr said I need to seriously consider a pacemaker. Told her I have a GPS watch for that :). Got no laugh so I think she is serious this year. Waiting on appt with cardiologist.

For a multitude of excuses I've let my weight creep up over the last year. It's gotten to the point where I get why most people hate running and claim it's painful. Because when you are carrying around extra weight, it does hurt.

He doesn't mention his height which obviously matters, but if you have pretty much any extra weight it's going to be barrier to more miles.

I personally have done better running less miles at a time, more frequently. So I don't see an issue with 5 days a week. However if it's hurting, probably best to cut back. Also like you said, gotta lift bro. Without a solid weight routine working on core and leg strength I can't sustain higher mileage.

    Good luck at the cardiologist!

Thanks. I had some chest pains in my 30's and had the treadmill stress test. They nearly killed me trying to get my heartrate to target, I think maybe 165. Right now, when I run on a treadmill with HRM, I rarely get above 125 at an 8:00 min pace, so I am expecting the same problem. At least they'll have a defibrillator handy!

Yeah, the 5 day thing can be okay. I was also thinking about burnout. It can become an issue for me at 4 days a week. Guess I'm mentally lazy :anonymous:. Thoughts like, "cmon man, your old, quite pushing yourself and enjoy these golden years. Nobody else your age is out running in 90 degree, high humidity conditions. Just have a beer instead". Some days I listen to those thoughts. I like those days.

I know plenty of older guys out there running. Actually most of them marathon and ultra guys who will still pack on heavy mileage and peak around 100 miles a week for a 100 miler. They can whoop my ass. I wanna be like them when I grow up.

I wanna grow up, I just don’t wanna get old!

I’m investing to buy my lover a $1.5M house in the rockies. Kinda want to see that happen.

I’d also like an executive leadership role one day. I wanna be the man, not bustin meh ass for the man.

I’m super excited for my 40s. After that maybe the hands if time can slow their roll LOL.

I said, growing up leads to growing old and then to dying..
Ooh and, dying to me don't sound like all that much fun...
