Today I switched into 4Lo for the first time in about a year. After I maneuvered and went back to 2Hi I parked on concrete and it appears that the front differential is leaking. It looks like some has come out and after a few more miles on the truck, it is still leaving a small spot. Maybe a couple of ounces so far.

My question is that I am about 150 miles from home with nothing open tonight. Can I get back home tomorrow without breaking anything or do I need to make changes to my plans?

The volume of oil in the diff is mainly for heat dissipation when you are running, under load, in 4WD. If you think there is still some oil in there, and only lost an ounce or two, I wouldn’t sweat it. Just stay in 2WD.

Did you check it before you put it into 4lo? No?

The question is, where is it leaking from?
Depending on the leak location, this might be simple, or more complex.
Until we know where the leak is originating from, we can’t give you a good answer.

if its leaking it still has fluid, so i say run it home and you will probably be fine.

    I don't like to wonder...
You can go to any auto parts store, TSC or Wal-Mart and get some gear oil and a set of Allen wrenches to top it up. Many repair chains like Monro, Firestone, etc have Sunday hours too, it would only take them 10 minutes to check/top it up.

Good luck and keep us informed. :fingerscrossed:

BTW: It is a good idea to exercise the 4 x 4 system every month of so even if it is only in a dirt driveway or parking lot.

check the drain plug torque with an allen wrench. might be loose. it's really easy to add more fluid. easier than changing the engine oil.

Sorry for the delayed response, this ended up being the problem on I could get to a place to look at it. Got it tightened up and no more leaking. Made it home just fine. Thanks for all the help everyone.
