5 lug lt rear

hey guys looking for an lt shock for my truck out back any suggestions?? thanks!

 

If you go with king, Fox, Swayaway, Bilstein, Radflo, Which ever company. They all make a great product. I run FOA cause i was cheap at the time of build. I plan to upgrade in the future. I dont know if your going leafspring long travel or linked long travel. If your just leaf springs you will be fine with remote reservoir just a little more work to tune/revalve. You can go to a bypass. There are double bypass(2 tubes) and theres triple bypass(3 tubes). A bypass will require a little bit more room do to the tubes off the sides. But wiill give you a lot more tuning and easier to tune then a remote reservoir.

Then you got 2.5" diameter which is most common for leafs. You can go to a 3.0 or bigger but there a bit over kill for a prerunner. If your planning to race you may bump to a 3.0 cause they have a higher oil capacity which will help keep them cooler longer. When a shock gets hot you start to get shock fade which is almost like not having shocks.

As for price, I say shop around. If your looking for used I say search Race-dezert.com and Dezertrangers.com If your looking for new try Downsouth motorsports they have pretty good prices.

 

yeah its just leafs. ok cool but the thing is its not caged i want to be able to use the stock mounting points so i still have a bed. i was told about a bilstein because its cheaper? but not sure what he meant when he said theres nothing else for my truck haha

 

you doing actual long travel or just a mid travel? Cause to get the full potential out of a long travel leaf you will have to go through the bed or go with a cantilever setup under the bed.

i know total chaos make a shock mount so you can keep use of the bed for the 2nd gen 5 lug, idk if you can use it for a 1st gen, but im sure it wouldnt be too difficult to fab something up

i'd look into these. it'll take some fab work to install them and the lower shock mounts on the axle. but you'll be able to run a 2.0 performance shock (bilstein, king, SAW, fox) and still keep your bed.

Problem with the 95-04 is the wheel wells are so much smaller then the 05+. we dont have as much room unfortunately to get a full sized shock in there.

Cool Idea, Not as big as the TC setup so it wouldnt get him full potential of long travel but it would be a great temp fix until he wanted to go through the bed or go cantilever. With a 8 or 10" shock it would work if he went cantilever cause thats what most use or if he went front long travel most use it there as well.

oh, i didnt know the 1st gens wells a lot smaller. I guess they are a lot more limited as far as options

 

yeah thats the only issue. called up a buddy at a local off road shop and he said to get him collapsed an extended lengst on mounting points and that he could hook me up with something by bilstein. would my stock shock mounts be strong enough to handle the conditions??

 

Don't think you will find a shock that will fit under the bed at full bump and full droop with long travel leafs. I wouldn't trust using the stock mounts. I would say to get a shock mount to go off the axle then go up as high as possible.

What your trying to do will require limit straps and the suspension to be cycled to get the correct shock setup. Usually how shock setups are done is you get the springs installed then you get a 16 or 18" stroke shock. Setup the lower mounts then cycle the suspension to get the shock to work correctly. Then it will come down to valving. You cant just throw a bar underneath and weld a shock mount.

I think for what your trying to accomplish. I think your best bet would be to get some all pro prerunner leafs bolt them on then do a 10" shocks mounted off the back of the axle. it wont be long travel but you will have somewhere near 10-12" of travel.

(Remember travel numbers are not everything. Its all about tuning the shocks to work the best.)

Deaver makes a J59 8leaf leaf pack. It will fit tacoma 5 and 6 lugs.

The F85 i think is the 3leaf add a leaf that you would add to your stock leaf pack.

x2 thats why the, dare i say it, raptor does so well, the shocks are set up specifically for the truck

 

they may work. Wont be long travel but if you were to remove your overload leaf they may work good.
CJ has a set up for sale Dont know if he is willing to pull the leaf pack apart for you. He is a good guy iv made he a few small parts for his truck such as shackles, leaf hangers and battery trays.

The Raptors are cool but not for there price. I would rather have an lower model of the F-150 and build it.

 

oh without a doubt, im just saying for being mid-travel or whatever category it would be, it handles well in the whoops, and thats because of the shocks
