Good for you! Im a proponent for owner repairs. Glad you tried this swap, you must be proud. Saved you time, and endless trips to dealer who likely would have played repair games with you. And saved money!

So far. Hopefully it's all it was. Belt did look pretty dried out. The metallic sound hasn't come back though, which is weird. Just had a chirp sound.

    That's good to hear!

Small things I always do, like to learn as I go. There was a TSB about the belt but it's not worth the hassle and headache to get a new belt from them. Didn't realize how easy belts were.

Thank you for the information provided in this post. 2017 TRD Off Road with 39K that developed the same sound this morning. By the noise, I was sure it was an idler or something worse. Searched the forum and found this post. I wouldn't have believed that a bad belt could make this type of noise. I took a chance and went to the auto parts store and got a new belt. Changed it out and the noise was gone. Thanks again:fingerscrossed:

The noise came on within about a 30 minute time period. I left the house and went to town for a few items. When I got home and pulled in the driveway, my wife came out of the garage and gave me a dumbfounded look. When I shut the truck off, she said she had to see who pulled in, as it sounded like a POS pulled into the driveway. There were no strange noises prior to this.

Had a similar sound that would not go away just like OP's video. I looked everywhere for a solution like most of us have. For reference, I have a 2nd Gen Tacoma with 178k miles.

I took down the tension from the drive belt to check all the bearings (they were in great condition & smooth). Since I was down there I inspected the drive belt and it had minor cracks so I replaced that. I re-applied the tension back to the drive belt and tested the drive belt but the noise persisted. I then tested the alternator's voltage and it was lower than 12.5 volts so I knew I had to replace it.

After replacing the alternator with a new one (aftermarket brand) no more noise!

I hope this helps someone in a similar situation.
