I was on my annual trip returning from Utah. Towing my 7x14 trailer 4k lbs. right before North Las Vegas valley of fire. I was towing in fourth as I always do. Never over dive. Running about 3000 RPMs @70mph.

The truck started to shimmy like a popped trailer tire. Pulled over tires were good. Got back on the road.
Then all of a sudden the truck wouldn’t shift or make any more power in fourth. Drove about 30mph to the next exit where I let the truck idle while we took the trailer off and hook it to another truck in my group.

Proceeded home to Orange County with no trouble on the truck or the transmission. Approximately 200 miles. The truck seems to shift fine now in all gears with no load.

We had no headwind. Oh my temperatures on my gauges were normal. I get my transmission flushed religiously every 60,000.
Current odometer reading 193 at the time of the incident.

Also, I’m looking for a reputable Toyota transmission rebuild. I would like to do a full rebuild and see about putting in some upgraded parts.

I do a lot of towing with this truck. Orange County to Glamis ca multiple times a year and two trips to hurricane Utah.

Throwing any codes? Towing a lot, manufacturers have issued a last call on full size trucks with V8’s.

Seems like you've done your part to keep the truck happy while towing. Good luck on the rebuild which seems inevitable due to the mileage and use regardless.

Im assuming your an Auto? Do you monitor the AT temp with an OBD II reader? If not, did the AT TEMP dummy light come on on the dash at all?

Personally I wouldnt jump into a full rebuild into you do some more digging

From my understanding, the hot temperature light is only a feature on the 4x4 automatics.

According to my code reader, my trans was not throwing any codes. By the time that I got my code reader, out of my trailer and unpacked, everything was working normally.

Ahh, i am presently dealing with a GL4/GL5 issue.

In the Modesto area there is a great transmission shop we've used for years. (Presently doing my sons 6 manual)

Hmm yeah Im not 100% sure on that, you may be correct.

Still though, Id start simple with diagnosis before considering a full rebuild. Fluid level check would be my first step

luckily, it’s not my daily driver anymore. So I have time to do a diagnostics and research.

The last four years I’ve been able to keep it in the garage and only put about 5000 miles a year ish. But all those miles on towing.

    All stock, baby!
Does a PreRunner have an external transmission cooler? If not, that should definitely be a priority.

Yes, for factory tow package that was offered an 08. Oil cooler trans cooler.

I’m definitely taking suggestions on larger trans coolers if I end up doing a full rebuild
