I wouldn't do it. 40k for something you think you would learn to love is a no go imo.

I agree with JosefMD - if the truck isn't loaded up with worthless port-installed and dealer-installed options, go for it. It's really not that risky a purchase because of its high resale value and because you're not paying a "premium" to put one in the garage. In the Northeast, the port-installed crap is really out of hand and there's nothing one can do except roll the dice again and maybe come up with one that's not bastardized.

Holy crap are these trucks getting expensive now. I bought my 2020 access cab v6 sr5 with a lot more than that getting ceramic paint protection, the factory tonneau cover, and power sliding rear window that wasn't available standard for access cabs, plus the tech packages for bit over $36k otd...that included registration also. I had no trade, it was a straight up sale.

I ended up getting it. 40k OTD, chose the longer term of 60 months @ 4.25% to give breathing room on the payment instead of 48 months @ 3.25

    That's a nice price...$38K Out The Door.

    I had $5K cash and $4800 trade-in.

Purchased the extended warranty and financed $35K at 1.8% for 60 months.

Total interest for $35K is less than $2K ($1762) with no penalty for early payoff.

Toyota was a bit upset that I didn't finance through them...the lowest rate they could offer me was just above 2.5%.

Prior to my truck purchase, we did Refi/Cash-out on our mortgage.

2.87% for 15 years and we deleted escrow...plus we got over $75K in cash-out which we used for remodeled kitchen & wood floors throughout the house!

The next time our home is appraised, our new improvements should help increase value.

We need a new roof soon...so that will also help with appraisal.

I don't want move but wife wants to downsize to a smaller home since our adult kids have their own living arrangements.

You did ok! MSRP was around $39.6 right? Also, you did better then me by .75 %. But for reference purposes, I got my TRD ORDC manual with $1300 of port installed fluff for $41 OTD. MSRP for my truck was just about same @39.7. Congrats on the new rig! Enjoy it.

For a couple thousand more the TRD Sport or Off Road seems like a better choice over the SR5. SR5 is a solid choice but for a bit more you might get something that will be easier to sell if you want out or something different.

Idk about easier to sell. There's a zillion of them here to pick from, plus our dealers seem to give you less on a trade if they're a trd vs other trims. Some figure their owners abuse them more off road knowing their might be issues. I've only owned sr5's, and done well when it comes to selling one.

    I knew I wanted a TRD.

My style of driving is more on-road than off...hence the Sport.

These trucks all start as SR5s; how you build them from there is up to each individual.

SR5s are nice but around here most everyone will hold out for a used TRD. I sold a 2013 Tacoma in 2015 and the first two questions asked at the time was it a 4x4 and is it a TRD. The TRD commands more resale $ looks nicer and has more options. Most that bought a TRD (including myself) will hardly ever take it off road. I wouldn't touch a molested, tuned or lifted truck anyway. I think most others figure that out.

Many that own trds here are lifted with big ass tires yet almost all never see a dirt road. Dealers see a red flag. That might be a valid reason they don't do as well on trades here. I know when a buddy of mine bought his tacoma, he had to have the decals trd on the truck, and all the bs to go with it, doing a lift, and 33'' tires to look the part. It was comical, as the truck never saw much off the asphalt, except for the dirt road to my home.

Took her for a break in drive. At 100 miles now. There’s been a noticeable oil burning smell from outside the truck standing near the front driver door. It isn’t terrible and no smoke but noticeable. Is this normal?

It reminded me of burning/melting plastic. Yes, it's normal. I smelled it during test drives and with the one i eventually bought. It went away at some point.

I qualified for the 2.99 threes years back, was surprised that it went up recently
