Not for a bike but for materials I've used a hitch mounted bed extender from harbor freight. It's worked great for carrying long boards and sheets of wood.

I was also looking at that as an option. I plan on hauling my mountain bike around and my short bed can't keep up, so I was hoping to contain it within the bed. I will definitely look into it, though. Thanks a bunch!

First gen tacomas had a part number stamped on to the 5100 rear shock bushing. not sure about the fronts. 5100's fronts for newer definitely don't have one stamped on to the bushing. It's easy to find the tops but not the bottoms which may mean they don't sell them individually as they maybe were never intended to be replaced? I'd call headstrong or Bilstein directly and see if they have an answer. If you have your stock stuff at home, go see if it's the same size bushing from stock and then rob it off there.

I have the Toyota extender, put in by my dealer prior to me buying the truck, I had no choice. Will take a pic later.
I like it. Very easy to take in and out. Stores on the back seat of my double cab when I do not need it out. I use it when I haul bags of mulch and soil from Lowes. I like it. I think it would work to hold the bike.
I also used the extender from Harbor freight for plywood and sheetrock. Also works good, added cross boards in the pockets above the wheel wells and by the rear gate.

PS I cannot add bed stiffeners with the extender that I had planned on installing before I got the truck. I was pissed about at first, but I do not have a topper, so stiffeners are not really needed.

PPS With extender stowed back in the bed I have a nice spot for backpacks, gas cans, etc. right by the tailgate, with stuff staying put and not sliding all the way to the cab. That's probably the best feature of heaving the extender.

Just get a tailgate pad , I've carried 6 or 7 mountain bikes in a shortbed with one and a hitch rack.

That's awesome, seems exactly like what I was looking for. Thanks for the pictures! Have a good one.

I'm thinking about that as well. Seems like it will be easy to load bikes as well. I really only need to transport one or two at a time, and am thinking that the increase utility of the bed extender might be nice too. I will definitely keep this in mind and do like the fact that it is far cheaper than an extender! Hope you have a good one!

You could save some money and just get the standard mount (not the specialized one in the link) and mount it to a block of 2x2 that you can mount into the rails with 2 bolts and 2 square nuts that fit into the rail system in our trucks.

You probably don't even need a block of wood and can mount the fork mount directly to the bed rail with 2 bolts and square nuts.

That's good to hear, I have some square nuts left over from an old tonneau cover that I took off. Could be a good experiment!

    ^^^This^^^

I don't have one for my Taco but I did have one on my F150 for 16 years and absolutely loved having it. Really came in handy at holding things near the tailgate and having larger items in the bed. I had a riding mower that I would take to our lake house and with the tailgate down and the extender at the end of the tailgate it gave added security of not allowing the mower to roll out the back. Locked in place in either direction and a breeze to take out if needed. Have contemplated getting one for the Taco but I don't have the need for one now as much as I did in the past.

Straps lock into tailgate latch when it is flipped out, so it does not come out.
To pull it out, raise to 45 degrees and lift out.

Being removable is a massive plus. Seems pretty easy, too! Now I just have to decide between OEM and Rough Country. Thanks for all the help!
