What is it with this new generation of people that can't just buy and install a normal winch

Didn't take long for the 3.0 to die in my friend's 2nd gen. He has a rolled 2000 Tacoma and plans to swap in the 95+ R150F & 5VZ. His current debate is dual transfer case or an adapter to run the RF1A case alone. Like $500-$1000 vs ~$3000-$3700...

Normally an IFS 2nd gen runner I'd say not to waste a 3.4 on... but that's cool, a 2 door. Don't see those often at all anymore, putting a 3.4 in those is possibly the easiest swap you can do. You could get a 3VZ R150 and save the adapter headache

The whole deal with that truck is it's a 2 door with minimal body rust in the fenders and a good frame. He's in Montana so I guess more exist up there from Canada.
He's pretty dead set on the Taco R150F since it came out of a low mile old man truck. I'm telling him to go duals and not a 4.7 single transfer case. But I don't know what I'm talking about as a chain drive Tacoma peasant. I'm guessing with duals you retain the stock low gear in one case and aren't stuck with the 4.7 low only?

I meannn... How hard does he wheel?

Correct, i have a 2.28 case and 4.7 case so I have the option of standard low, 4.7 low, and 2.28*4.7 low low

You could also put 4.7 in both cases but that's the path to exploding the gears in the rear case or cracking the case lol

Rural Montana back roads and some more aggressive trails to go fishing. Last time I saw him was 2017 and the stock S10 Blazer he had was hitting it's limits frequently. But the frame hang super low on those and it was on tiny tires.

The ORS adapter to run that R150F he has is $500. And either way he needs to buy a gear driven transfer case. Dude definitely has some options.

could do duals with 2.28 cases, that's probably plenty overkill without spending extra on 4.7s

Looks like Yota1 and Trail Gear are the only ones with anything in stock right now. Yota1 will sell either Marlin internals for a premium or trail gear internals.

I'm not even 100% sure that adapter I linked even works with a crawl box. You'd think it would since it adapts to a gear driven case but who's to say. Don't mind me.. just heavily researching someone else's project lol. Two 2.28 cases seems like the best option for him if he won't go to an older R150F.

I'd just get the older r150, itll be cheap as shit and if he wanted to he could swap around internals, but honestly toyota manuals last forever.

Yeah I told him if he runs the 3.4 R150F he has to be damn sure that adapter works with a crawlbox or he's stuck with a single case until he finds an R151/pre 95 R150F.
