In keeping of the rest of the world having the better car, Mitsubishi still made the Galant VR4 for that generation. And it also had a fast wagon variant.

It'll be legal to bring one of those here soon! Also, wasn't the Galant VR4 available in America until like 1993?

That seems to be correct. And looks as if 96-98 models are able to be imported. Besides this and the ubiquitous Skylines, I would love to import a '98 Honda Crossroad and take it to an American Honda dealer. I'd love to see their reaction.

There's always the Honda Beat. Though both will definitely cause confusion for different reasons...

The Honda Beat is a little 3-cylinder roadster; I've seen a few of those and posted the pictures here...

Wow. I didn't know this thread was alive.

OK, then. I hereby present the very first new car I ever bought; a 1980 Dodge Colt Hatchback with the RS option package. It was basically a rebadged Mitsubishi Mirage. This is not the exact one, but mine was just like this.

The Dodge Colt (and its sister ship the Plymouth Champ) was equipped with a Four Cylinder 1.6-Liter "Silent Shaft" engine which was quite innovative at the time. Since Four-bangers were notoriously prone to vibrations, Mitsubishi designed the engine with a counterweighted shaft that ran parallel to the camshaft and was driven by the camshaft chain. The Silent Shaft didn't really do anything; it just spun round and round, but because it was weighted on just one side, its vibrations offset the inherent vibrations of the engine itself, resulting in a smoother, quieter motor.

There was also a big push at the time to increase fuel economy and carmakers were under a Federal mandate to raise their CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) ratings. But small, economy cars typically had to sacrifice performance in favor of fuel efficiency. So to get around this, the Dodge Colt was equipped with an 8-speed "Twin Stick" manual transmission. It had a standard Four Speed shifter, and a second shift lever labeled "Power" and "Economy" that was linked to a two-speed differential. The idea being that around town and on curvy roads the driver could select the slightly lower-geared "Power" mode for plenty of pep and pickup. Then out on the highway for long-distance travel the Twin Stick would be set to the higher-geared "Economy" mode for better gas mileage. The Twin Stick also gave you a two-speed reverse which was basically worthless except for the bragging rights.

But unlike 4WD truck transmissions that were geared as 1Lo, 2Lo, 3Lo, 4Lo, then 1Hi, 2Hi, 3Hi, 4Hi, the Colt's gear ratios were arranged as follows: 1P, 1E, 2P, 2E, 3P, 3E, 4P, 4E. This meant that if you were really fast with your wrist action and could throw each shifter in the right sequence, you go from a standing start to top speed by running up through all eight gears!

The little econobox performed rather well. The Colt could go from 0 to 60 in 11.5 seconds; not bad at the time and its acceleration rivaled that of the then-popular Porsche 924. Sadly, it gave up the ghost at about 88,000 miles. By then I was married and traded it for a 1988 Subaru 4WD Hatchback.

I sure do miss that little car.

It's been merged with a few other threads, but it is in fact alive; I have pictures of a white 1984 Colt Turbo in here that I saw maybe two years ago...

My mother had one of these with the twin stick. I took my drivers test in it. A blast to drive and yes, I'd go though all 8 gears just to show off for my friends. In reality you really only needed 1P - 4P then 4E.
    :burnrubber: :)
