push button start is really cool when it works; my 2022 Miata had it

and I’ve had keyless fobs not work even with a good battery; at least five times my Miata just refused to start. It’s one of the reasons I sold it after five months

Exactly. Drove my Dad's Avalon for a day ended up leaving with the fob in my pocket. Didn't notice until the next day. I don't understand the craze. Key works everytime.

 

Got a lot of interesting answers today, but first off, however in the world I was told about the V6 continuing and 2.7L I4, I'll say it again like I did back on April 2nd, it was wrong info shared by me (unknowingly) on here from Toyota contacts and Tier 1 sources I trusted. Don't know why and how those even came up, because it never made sense when I first heard it in November 2022 and posted it here. The 3-pedals are for the 2.4T T24A-FTS.

@OVTune first mentioned this turbo quite a long time ago in 2019-20, but we learned more about it in June 2021 officially.

The 2024 Tacoma will indeed be powered by the T24A-FTS, allegedly putting out roughly 300 horsepower give or take (grain of salt please) in this application.

The 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro will be the i-Force Max 2.4T hybrid as we've all seen. I am not 100% certain about the 326 hp, 465 lb-ft estimate shared on TW by @CygnusX191, but he's probably right in having first been shown this vehicle last fall and quite ecstatic about it.

Toyota has developed a new manual transmission for it, meeting the higher torque output of the new engine at over 300 lb-ft, compared to the current 2GR-FKS at 265 lb-ft. My question about if the i-Force MAX hybrid will offer the manual, but it hasn't been answered yet and I don't want to press them for too many answers. The 10-Speed Auto also, not an 8-speed. And don't expect a CVT. PM me, if understandably skeptical of what I've said here.

The source of my new info, is obviously Toyota USA (per teaser today) and an employee of theirs explaining the conversion from 2GR V6 to turbo T24A across the board.

• Like the Tundra, the 2024 Tacoma has the same 10AT.
• New 6-Speed Manual for 2.4T only.
• No NA I4 nor V6 offering, apparently.
• 300ish +/- on base truck (not my info, take it with a grain of salt)
• 326 hp; 465 lb-ft (See mention above)

I'm being very careful who I trust on anything Toyota going forward and apologize times infinity, for posting about the carryover engines from December 2022 to March 2023.

I also blame myself for pushing the idea of the death of the 6MT in the Tacoma back in 2021-22, because no one was thinking that way back in 2019-20 outside of low manual take rate.

I'd say I was a little pessimistic that the torque capacity of the AC6/RC62F manual was too low for the T24A-FTS, as seen with the then new numbers of the 2022 Lexus NX 350 outputting 275 hp and 317 lb-ft. of torque. The RC62F capacity to my discovery, was 300 lb-ft against the 265 lb-ft in the 2016MY+ 3.5L V6 6MT Tacomas. I've seen twin-turbo 3.5L aftermarket jobs on 6MT 3rd gens, so that limit puzzled me.

I was very convinced that Toyota wouldn't spend the necessary expenditure to develop a manual transmission for TNGA-F Dynamic Force turbocharged engine applications for USA, but with learning what I did from both this teaser and a Toyota employee who seems willing to answer my questions honestly, is the that the base 2.4T will have the stick. I'll ask him about the hybrids and I hope he cannot see this comment on TW.

 

Being that 'Yota Corp outright *shocked* us with the MT, I now wonder if there's a nonzero chance that they will offer a ~3.0 TT Raptoresque powerplant.

 

You might be onto something . Watching TFL talk about it and they mentioned they would have to make a new transmission for a 4cyl so I have a feeling @Carmaker1 was correct that the V6 will carry over for a year only for the manual though.

 

Very interesting. I'm just skeptical that they will put a manual in such a powerful hybrid in a truck. Dunno, would be a big seller though.

300hp 2.4L turbo six speed sign me up! 10speed 2.4L turbo hybrid with 10speed has to get about 25mpg I would think

Wow it’s the end of an era. Wonder if we’ll see a lower horsepower tune for SR trims like the Tundra.

I also don't understand how people lose a FOB, then thank the heavens that they have keys instead. If someone walks off with a FOB, why wouldn't they walk off with keys as well?

I lost a FOB myself, know what else was on it? My keys...

I agree with you about losing keys too. But we often get someone where and don’t know where in the car the fob is. We spend five minutes searching for it. I don’t have that problem with my key.

But I wouldn’t be upset about having a fob instead of a key; first world complaints. Looks like the 4th gen is going to be great. I wish they’d hurry up and reveal the whole thing.

It has been nearly 20 years since my last vehicle that required an actual key to start. When I first got into the Taco for a test drive, the key would not turn. For the life of me, I could not think of why that would be. I thought maybe it was like one of the old Fords that had a button you had to push to turn the key or something. I asked the salesmen and he said, "Sometimes you have to jiggle the steering wheel to turn the key." I felt like a kid on his first day in driver's ed class. I had completely forgotten that steering wheel locks could block the ignition from turning.

It's a truck after all, so so what? But it still feels like stepping back into the '00s every time I turn that key. Even further if it happens to be locked up. "Jiggle the wheel!" That's some precision machinery.

 

I guess when I had a fob it just stayed in my pocket and not just floating around the cab so that issue is foreign to me, but I can see how if multiple people are driving the same car it could get weird I guess.

Yeah I just can't see a key ever being a thing I want or need to experience going forward. I think the last vehicle I drove with a key was a used MT Sport I took for a spin when my truck was in for an oil change a few years back.

I just don't miss anything to do with the whole key experience, from having to carry them around in my pockets, to jiggling the steering wheel lol.

I did like the switchblade key on my GTi though, so if I had to have one, that'd be the only type I'd deem ok. Lexus key card trumps all though.

 

Now people are complaining about key Fobs...

 

Toyota actually managed to do a good tease today. It's thrown us off our game.

 

This Canadian had/has an Access Cab Manual transmission in Off-Road trim in both 2018 and 2022.
That combination is still available in Canada for 2023.
