Hello, I live in the High Rockies in Colorado, and I'm looking for a muffler replacement that will give me more power to get up these steep hills! I'll also take other suggestions to give me more torque/hp!

TRD catback exhaust is rated by Toyota to improve hp and torque by a minuscule amount but most here will say otherwise.

In your neck of the woods a supercharger is your best best, it’s really the only method to substantially improve performance by any noticeable means.

You can also look into this, do your own research though as I don’t know much about this modification.

Your best bet is a supercharger, muffler isn’t going to help at all

Headers, y pipe, cam gears, and a tune would probably be the next alternative but still won’t be as powerful as a supercharger

Don't expect any significant power increases from any cheap bolt-on mods like intake or exhaust. They probably won't hurt but don't expect anything groundbreaking. If you really want some extra power then get ready to pony up for a supercharger.

I’m sure there’s much more but you get the idea…every little helps. :)

lol... $7,000 seems on the low side unless you can do all the work/tuning yourself and source some of the parts used.

Don't own a tacoma if you want lots of power in a truck

7 Gs should cover the magnuson SC as well as an AFE CAI or TRD exhaust, as long as OP does the installing himself.

Just sell the Tacoma and sink the money into a V8 truck at that point.

Maybe when the Tacoma goes all electric, these “my truck is slow” threads will end.

I feel like a tune would get you much closer to where you need to be for not nearly as much money as several of the above posts suggest you spend.

Edit: when we travelled through CO the power loss was noticeable, especially with all my gear in the bed and the back seat packed full. 6MT 4.0 in my truck.

After now adding a cheap-o throttle controller- that alone would have made it 20% better right there, not having to mash the pedal to get the truck to move uphill. (got mine for $40 on Amazon). This is temporary until I get tuned.

this is going to be the controversial post, but here goes..

the truck does run 'fine' on 87 octane
mine has more power when i put in 89 or 91. not gobs more power, but even when going up a hill, with the higher octane, the engine can build rpms and speed with a little more throttle, as compared to 87, you have press it down further and downshift to get more power.

if all i'm doing is flatland commuting, 87 is fine. but if i'm going into the hills, i notice a performance increase with the higher octane, especially if i have more of a load.

try it... i also notice a slight increase in mpg, although cost-wise it's a wash.

I don't live in the Rockies, but I've driven all over them since the 1980's in 6 different vehicles. My 07 Tacoma as it came from the factory handled the altitude better than most. You may need to lower your expectations. In many places in the west, I saw 80 mph speed limits. My Tacoma would do just fine at 65-70. Above 70 and above 7000' and it really struggled. I'm content to keep it under 70. In fact, even at sea level fuel mileage drops dramatically above 70.

There isn't really anything you can do that will be cost effective. It would cost several thousand to see very modest gains, and likely some loss of reliability. Toyota designs their trucks for modest performance. That is, I think part of the secret to their longevity. Your best bet is to trade for something else if you can't live with the performance you're getting. Ford's turbocharged engines aren't affected nearly as much by altitude as conventional engines.
