Well they are parking brakes for the longest time now not emergency brakes.

You're still talking as if the engine needs to run all the time while the vehicle is driven? :) That hasn't been the case for 5+ years with all the vehicles equipped with automatic start-stop, that holds brakes at a traffic light with electronics while the engine is shut off. There's enough redundancy in the service brakes with multiple channels, power sources, and hydraulic circuits to account for these things.

Keep in mind the majority of drivers are stupid and don't use the parking brake. On a boat ramp the weight of the truck + trailer is then held against the transmission parking pawl. If the parking pawl is broken or misadjusted and the vehicle rolls away, in the current regulatory environment that's considered the carmaker's fault and a recall is issued. At least with an electronic parking brake that engages automatically, it guards against this level of user stupidity.
Not with the 159-hp 4-cyl you have :p

Different terms for the same thing. Safety relying on an electronic actuator is something the safety administration never should have allowed.

But they cater for the lowest denominator including those who get the brake and gas pedals mixed up and never open the hood themselves. So an electronically actuated parking brake that engages/disengages automatically is deemed safer for the public than a mechanical one. This is not the same crowd looking for twin-stick transfer cases and mechanical cutting brakes

How does any of that technology save you if you are driving 70 mph and your engine shuts off due to an electrical issue. I’ve been there and done that with a hand e brake.
At the boat launch you flip that little switch and assume it’s going to work?
Ever have a brake line fail and drive home with the hand brake? I have.
I’ve been involved with an issue at the boat ramp with a RAM with the knob transmission selector popping out if park. Shit happens. There’s a reason why we used to have legitimate E brakes.

So cringy when you see someone at the ramp, slam it in park and open their door as the all the weight shifts onto the pawl. I've never had a bad experience, but sure in the hell dont want to deal with that mess.

The parking pawl in the transmission, though small, has the mechanical advantage of gearing. For a similar reason, the pinion-mounted parking brake found on some rock crawlers are very powerful.

Ford transmissions are notorious for weak parking pawls.

It is also 2 inches longer, 2 inches wider and has better approach and departure angles. There is also an additional cab configuration as well as engine configuration. Rumor has it there will be a manual as well.

^Yes and Nissan had a few that rolled away at the assembly line (workers who park them at the end of the line don't engage the parking brake apparently); that triggered a recall.

Similar scope of change as the 4Runner going from 4th gen to 5th gen, and more extensive than the Taco had going from 2nd gen to 3rd gen.

Y’all have me worried now. Going to pick up my first jet ski this weekend. Don’t wanna be that guy at the boat ramp. Although I have a manual and the Parking brake is used so much it’s like breathing in and out.
