Ha! you have me beat as far as Southern Ohio goes. I lived just south of Bainbridge, OH on a dead-end dirt road. My brother and sister still live in the area but its Amish country now.

I didn't even realize I had a southern accent until I went to USMC boot camp in 98 and the drill instructors kept asking me what part of Kentucky I was from.

Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio. Its on US 50 almost 70 miles due east of Cincy. They have stores just a few miles from my childhood home, and have bought most of the land surrounding it and live on the same road. Youll have to pass several horses and buggies anytime you go for a trip into town.

Then you know Huntington WV. I had a good buddy in the AF who was from there. A Hatfield no less. He took me to the tri-point area when we went there for a weekend visit.

I always like referring to the Mason and Dixon line as a divider between Northern and Southern land. Officially it doesn't go past Maryland, but I just keep drawing the line west in my mind until I reach the foothills of the Rockies...

 

YES!! know this area! its only about an hour away from me. if Rt32 is closed they send you across rt50 instead which runs pretty close to there!

Hey guys I ended up picking up this 2018 d170 mower with 54” cutting deck. It has 84 hours on it. Got it for $1300 not sure if it was a good deal lol. It was just serviced at the shop but I tried to mow my front yard with it and the motor stalls out even in the highest deck setting.stalls right away in reverse too. It did rain this morning but the grass doesn’t feel too wet. I removed the mulching guard thing.

Any clues?

Can you rotate all the blades by hand? Might have a frozen spindle.

 

My first guess would be a safety switch, like the one under the seat

 

they all rotate. It looks like it has a mulcher kit.

I just realized I was running it with the choke on. Full throttle and choke is all on the same lever. That would likely cause this issue correct?

 

yeah thats literally gonna choke the power out of it....

but you are asking an awful lot out of that little fella to cut that down that far on the first pass with stuff that tall, thick & wet.

be careful & go super slow or you'll smoke the belt on it.

 

This was with the deck in the highest position. Would have thought it would raise higher. I might wait for it to dry out, or weed wack some of it first.

 

I'd try it with the choke-off, in 1 or 2 gear. The JD should be able to mow that grass if it's running right.

 

It has a hydrostatic transmission. Wish it had a manual gear selection.

 

Well then use light pressure on the throttle to keep your speed down to a few MPH.

Edit: If it has a manual throttle/cruise control, use it.

 

Yep u are gonna hv to just creep thru that to get it down to regular Mow height, then it will be fine in a couple of mows.

 

It does have this mulching kit installed which I assume isn’t helping with the deck getting packed with weeds.

 

Mowing or plowing snow with a manual transmission is a PITA, use that hydro for a while and you would never want a manual.

 

I just don't like the power loss from HSTs. I know they make operation easier than a manual, but...

 

If you are just mowing open fields a gear tractor is fine, for normal residential/suburban mowing a hydro is way more convenient.

Same for plowing snow, a manual is fine for plowing miles of road but a PITA in a driveway or parking lot.

 

now im gonna tease ya.

thats why you get a HST mower with a way bigger motor than needed.

there is no substitute for cubic inches. :-0
