    "That hose" is the fresh filtered air inlet for the PCV system.
    Think of the PCV valve as a vacuum regulator of sorts. It allows for engine vacuum to draw fresh air through the entire engine without allowing a full on vacuum leak issue.
    "Fresh" air is drawn into the ds valve cover through that hose then travels down to the crankcase then up to the pass side valve cover, thru the PCV valve and into the manifold. All this time picking up crankcase vapors/blow by and positively ventilating them.

    Folks tend to get confused about "that hose" because it's connected to the intake and think the flow must be from the valve cover to the main intake tube. It's the other way around.
    In theory "that hose" should be bone dry but in some cases/situations the engine can produce more blow by volume than the normal ventilating flow of the PCV system. When this happens that hose can look wet/oily.

    The box is just a chamber to help deaden sound from the pluses or essentially the rhythmic shock waves in the intake flow as the intake valves open and close. There is no engine management function and many folks ditch it for a cleaner under hood look.

    @1998 TACO24 Did the included clamps work for you? The clamps that came with mine didn't fit well--the clamp would bottom out before engaging the bed rail. I ended up re-using the clamps from the older tonneau I was replacing. The old tonneau was very similar in design, and the clamps were nearly identical but looked like they might have been modified by the previous owner.

    Still, for under $150 I think it was a good-enough buy.

    How is the MAF involved? For instance, if the source of air for the DS vent is changed, does that change the accuracy of the MAFs calculation/data it sends to the OEM ECU?

    In a MAF system air is metered before it goes into the engine. That hose that allows fresh air is after the MAF, so any breathing it does is with combustion byproducts or intake of already metered air, it enters the metered air stream again via the PCV valve. It's a closed system essentially, only way that air gets out of he engine is through an exhaust valve. If you open that breather to the outside world some of what it intakes or let's out will either be metered air or enter the air stream without having been metered, thus throwing off the mixture calculation and causing and richer or leaner burn. In other words it's a vaccum leak. But with the speed density metering your haltech does... You can put the fresh air vent or the PCV or both to air and it won't care, it'll raise the idle maybe but since the haltech is adjusting based on manifold pressure/vac not flow, you can't really trip it up by introducing more or less air. It'll just turn down the IACV and continue on its merry way. I just have the fresh air vent open to air with a little filter clamped on and the PCV ran to the manifold like normal (PCV valve is just a really lame check valve).

    This is not something that has come up for discussion here before that I am aware of.

    It does seem like an oil catch can on that side might be rather pointless. Do aftermarket intake tubes for MAF applications have a fitting for a vent tube to the DS side?

    I don't know why it would come up. It works pretty well the way it's designed, it's not an uncommon design either. Boosted engines tend to find themselves with more crankcase pressure than naturally aspirated ones so that fresh air vent might find itself with more oil vapor and whatnot coming out of it under pressure but for a naturally aspirated engine running that to a catch can would be extremely pointless yes. And yeah I'm pretty sure all of the aftermarket tubes have a nipple for that vent.

    I’m surprised you haven’t noticed any discharge out of that hose into your intake tube like Dan mentioned, especially with the SC. While it doesn’t catch as much as from the PCV, my catch can for the drivers side valve cover definitely collects some nastiness.

    Very interesting, thanks! Is it surprising then, that I am seeing oil leaking out of that fresh air intake/source and down my intake tube? Does that mean I have air (and oil) flowing the wrong direction?

    Note: My PCV seemed to be working correctly when I pulled it (as in, I was able to blow air through one direction but not the other).

    Nah you're good, it's totally normal. Even a perfectly healthy engine will generate some positive pressure in the crankcase at certain points during use, sometimes a bit goes out the vent tube when that happens.
