I’m pretty sure there are fines involved if selling to a minor.
I’m just old enough to have experienced cigarette vending machines.
My first job was at a bar and restaurant. I started 3 days after I turned 15.
They had a cigarette machine, but it wouldn’t accept money unless the bar tender pressed a button that was wired to what basically amounted to a door bell.
Once you knew where the button was, well………
    I don’t know anything about it……:D

There are, point is I was 23 and she knew it but still had to card me every time because her company required it.

I belonged to a private club that had the machine and setup with the button you mention

There’s nothing wrong with getting carded.
I don’t care. If I worked in a place that sold such items, I’d probably card everyone all the time. Just to cover my own ass. After all, if I am showing up to a job, it’s probably one I want to keep. So you’re getting carded.

When my cousin's husband worked at a Wawa in high school, there was apparently a rash of minors buying cigarettes and they made it a policy that everybody had to be carded every time. My cousin's husband told me that several regular customers who were clearly well over the age of 18 angrily stormed out of the store after being asked to show ID. There is a point where it stops being about protecting minors and/or following the law, and just becomes obnoxious.

My issue with that Wawa was not that they carded me, but rather that they were obsessed with why I was buying so many different brands of cigarettes at one time, and it was really none of their business. One time I bought a hoagie there, and at some point between paying for my order and going to claim my hoagie, I lost the receipt. There weren't very many people in the store, but this woman was a by-the-books mental midget who asked to see my receipt; I told her I had lost it and demanded the hoagie that I had already paid for...

    :annoyed:

    Cue the arguing!

    :duel:

The cashier overheard the argument (this was the older and smaller Wawa in Doylestown that was built in like 1975, and was torn down in like 2021 to make way for a bank after a new Wawa was built within walking distance), and printed out a new receipt. This was before COVID; I have been ordering sandwiches at both Wawa and Sheetz for years, and that is the only time I have ever been asked to show the damn receipt.

But it is their business. It is illegal to straw purchase cigarettes, correct? (Or at the very least, illegal to purchase cigarettes for minors)

You stated that you are clearly not a smoker. So why are you routinely buying a bunch of cigarettes? Could be up to no good.

Not calling you out on your purchases, but there is logic behind a store attempting to follow the law when someone appeared to be gaming the system.

There used to be a Bon-Ton in Doylestown, but it closed a while ago. This was in early 2015, not long after I started working at Puck. My boss paid me under the table to run errands for her, and on this day she gave me her credit card to buy pillow cases or bed sheets (I forget which) at Bon-Ton. This was back before chip cards were a thing, and occasionally you got an obnoxiously by-the-books employee who would demand ID and then refuse to let you complete the sale if your name didn't match the one on the credit card. I am all for preventing credit card fraud, but there were times when employees really needed to just take my word for it...

The foreign lady at Bon-Ton took it a step further. She asked to see my ID when I handed her a credit card that said "Samantha so-and-so", and I said there was no point because that was my boss and she had sent me here to run errands. The bitch behind the counter refused to give me the credit card back, and I called up my boss, who was ready to give the woman a piece of her mind over the phone, but luckily she talked to her manager and got the okay to give me Sam's credit card back; I went back to Sam's house, got cash, and bought what she wanted. After that incident, Sam went out of her way to give me cash when I ran personal errands for her.

I stated back in 2015 that I wasn't a smoker, and learned to keep my mouth shut after that. It was different employees by the time I was making multi-brand purchases, so no way in hell they recognized me. My nicotine-addicted coworkers were in their early 20s all the way up to their late 40s; I knew I wasn't breaking any laws, but the Wawa people decided to be cunty about it, so I kept my mouth shut and there wasn't really much they could do about it.

I'll give you another story about dealing with stupid people while working at Puck, and this happened at both the grocery store and Best Buy; I occasionally paid with business checks. These checks had the name of the bar (Puck), the name of the corporation under which Puck did business, and the physical address of Puck. I was asked for ID when paying with a check, which is fine, but on at least two occasions I was initially told that I couldn't use the check because the address on the check didn't match the one on my driver's license. I explained that the address on the check was that of a commercial property, and even the owners of the property didn't have that address on their driver's licenses. At the grocery store, this was good enough...

At Best Buy the employee was a moron who couldn't grasp the above concept, a huge argument broke out, and the store manager had to get involved. After the store manager explained that it was a business check, I was allowed to go through with the purchase.

One time in like 2012 at the same Best Buy where the employee couldn't grasp the concept of a business check with a commercial address, my mom gave me the okay to buy a new digital camera as a belated present; I didn't have a credit card at the time, and my mom had given me her credit card to buy stuff (mostly groceries) without issue, so she gave me her credit card to buy this camera.

I went to the Best Buy already knowing which camera I wanted, picked it out, and once again got into an argument with an employee when they wouldn't let me use my mom's credit card even though I had permission to do so; I had to drive all the way back to our house which was about 12 miles away, get well over $100 in cash from my mom, and drive all the way back to Best Buy!

    :annoyed:

This was when we lived at the townhouse in Furlong, which was farther from the Best Buy in Montgomery Township than our current house is; I just looked it up on Bing Maps, and it is exactly 24 minutes each way. I had no credit history when I finally got my first credit card in 2016, so my dad had to cosign for me, and by the time I got that credit card Best Buy was no longer asking for ID. I bought myself a new Nikon SLR camera at a different Best Buy in 2016 for several hundred dollars, and they didn't check my ID.

I am working on this issue with my therapist, so please no ball-busting, even if it is good-natured. It is a well-known fact that I was stopped by police in Doylestown Borough for taking pictures, back in March 2013; I have gotten over that incident in itself, but I have no criminal record and have been arrested. That incident in 2013 was my first encounter with law enforcement since May 2006, when I got pulled over while my dad was giving me a driving lesson in May 2006 (I will tell this story next). For somebody with autism who hadn't had an encounter with police in almost 7 years (at the time), having four cops interrogating you for 20 minutes can be rather intimidating and quite traumatizing.

As such, while I have largely gotten over that incident, being asked for ID tends to trigger me due to the unpleasant memory of that police sergeant pulling up alongside me while I was walking back to my truck, hopping out of his marked Expedition, and saying "Can I see some ID?"

The phrase "Can I see some ID?" has triggered me ever since; I have been pulled over a few times between May 2017 and February 2023, but the cop always asks for "license and registration". This doesn't bother me. It's only "Can I see your ID?"...

When I was going to bars on weekends pre-COVID, I knew the drill; I would have my license ready before I got to the door and just hand it to the bouncer before they could even ask. We lived in the Furlong house from September 2007 to March 2016, and while we were still living there, I flipped out on a grocery store cashier for asking to see my ID to buy a Full Metal Jacket DVD out of the discount bin.

At that same grocery store, I flipped out on yet another cashier for asking to see my ID when I was buying a pack of O'Doul's nonalcoholic beer; I even drank a can in the truck on the drive home... :D

My cousin's husband is an athletic trainer for a minor league hockey team, and before COVID, he always got us free tickets (my parents, my cousin, and me). One time after 2016 but before 2019, I brought my Nikon SLR with a detachable lens to take pictures of the hockey players. One time, I was probably a beer in and not 100% sober.

A female usher came up to me and said that I couldn't take pictures with a "detachable lens camera"; I couldn't comprehend what she was saying, as I knew for a fact that photography was not prohibited. As stated above, I also was not 100% sober. My cousin and parents kept me from blowing my stack at her while she was there, but after she walked away, I loudly referred to her as a "nazi bitch". Thankfully, she didn't hear me. I told many people this story, and they all thought it was stupid; I also scoured the internet and photography forums for answers. The best I've been able to come with is that it's antiquated law from before phones and non-SLR camera became really good, intended to keep unauthorized professional-style photos from being taken and sold for profit; I have absolutely no intention of selling my photos, and I still think it's stupid. I have not been to a hockey game since probably 2019, and have no idea if this stupid rule is still in place.

Seems like an odd rule, maybe you are right in them thinking you were somehow trying to profit from it.

Wouldn’t really call it a law. Private venue, they can enforce rules as they please. I have been to events where photography is not allowed at all.

A lot of times, it will say on the tickets whether or not photography is allowed. It did not say anything about restrictions on specific camera types on the hockey tickets...

Here's another story. One time last year (possibly 2021), I noticed this 50-something woman in a Honda Fit who seemed to not only be following me, but taking video with her smartphone. We were both in the left lane, and she wasn't really tailgating me, but she was close enough that I took notice; I have bumper stickers and magnets on the back of my truck that reflect my viewpoints on certain things that can't be discussed publicly on TW. My best guess is that this woman didn't agree with what was on said bumper stickers and magnets, and saw the need to document my truck...

I became so unnerved that I got into the right lane and let her pass me. She immediately put her phone down and looked straight ahead, not making any eye contact with me as she drove past.

I have been flipped off and denied the opportunity to change lanes by people who don't agree with the stuff on the back of my truck, but people act so childish that it's more amusing than anything!:D

I feel like we’re trending towards a conversation where feelings might get hurt.

Charlie, what do you have planned for the weekend?
