IF I was going to build something for the sole purpose of off roading then I would start on an fj or jeep platform from the 60-70's or buy a quad! lol

I don't think it's the Hummer itself but a specific owner of one on here.

Well that, and from my experience and research. Hummers would blow on the trails.

I chose the 73 Scout for the following reasons an early 70s bronco would have been good for the same reasons.

    V8
    Smog Exempt (cali sucks)
removable top like a jeep but more storage
    Cool old school rig
    Very Simple
    Tough

Well, after much deliberation, I decided to go with a 98 Cherokee. I really wanted a late 90s 4runner...but the prices were just way too high for my current budget. The E locker was the main selling point, plus fitting 31s stock and truck frame. I found two locally yesterday, but when I got to the lot, they weren't there. Looked at a couple XJs and they were beat. My last stop was a 98 XJ they were asking 6K for. Ended up talking them down to 4300. High miles @ 166K, but obviously well maintained. Power is instant and plentiful, brakes work extremely well, cold start no problem @ 36 degrees. No leaks on the pavement under it. Two previous owners, one was a lease and one was a company car. Drove way better than a couple at 100K miles. I could not find any yotas for under 6K. I could barely find clean xjs around here for under 6K. So I think I did already and my wrangler buddy was with me...he is as surprised as I am at how mechanically sound this vehicle appears.

I will be doing mostly trail like I said before. I had an opportunity to buy an 88 bronco for $1500, but it is just too big. I can lift this XJ and still fit it in the garage. It is tiny, but big enough for me. Feels like a go kart compared to the Tundra. A sammi would be too small for my needs. I am sure I could have found a rough one for 2K, but this will be a weekend car in addition to offroading so I wanted something somewhat presentable. I think I found it and it was within my budget. Hopefully when I can afford it, I will have a 99 4runner as well..

couple in the garage. Checked it over today, looks pretty sweet. all fluids look new/fresh. Oil is clear, not black like you would expect a high mileage engine. brake fluid is clear, coolant looks and smells fresh, tranny is a little dirty, but it shifts great. Pretty excited about it.
