I'd have to say that you're doing OK, but where do you put your Tacoma?

Here are the 2 Y88 cars I’ve owned. Top was in 1986, bottom was 2016. Both 4-speed cars with WS6 option.

From that day forward I was hooked on Pontiac. Three years later I lucked out and scored a 1969 Ram Air IV GTO from a friend. He was the second owner buying it from the original 70 something year old owner. He only drove it for three months before losing his license. This was in a years time of ownership. As soon as he bought it he had the motor rebuilt by none other than drag race legend Eddie Hills mechanic. Balanced and blue printed and some other trickery to the already most potent motor ever put in the GTO’s.

After getting it back three months later and finally being able to drive it he brought to a night party we had at a country park. He was showing it off and doing 1/4 mile pulls out in front of the park as everybody was drooling on it between pulls he’s shut it down and pop the hood for it to cool down. He was breaking in the fresh motor. This was my first time seeing it. Fast forward several months, my best friend in casual conversation tells me Mike is thinking of selling his GTO because he lost his license and it’s been sitting for a few months. Without showing my excitement [which inside I was bursting with] as soon as I had some alone time I drove over to Mikes house. I ring the doorbell and his mom answers the door. I asked for Mike, she says hold on and shuts the door and goes and gets him. I’m still on the front porch, he opens the door and greets me, I say hey man I heard you are selling the GTO, he says NO! I say oh sorry as I start to turn to leave and his nosey mom from behind him swings the door wide open and yells, YES HE IS! Mike starts screaming at his mom as the door slams, I hear now all three, Mike and both of his parents arguing, I feel I have to leave so I start to head to my car, just before I get there the door opens and Mike says, yes I’ll sell it. We made the deal and I gave him $1000 to hold and I’d get the rest to him in a week.

I was so desperate to own that car and I didn’t have the rest of the money but knew if I could quickly sell my current car for a certain amount I could pull this off. I kept quiet to all my friends of why I was selling my freshly built ‘75 Dodge Colt. That car was all freshly redone custom with a tweaked 4-banger and fresh custom paint paint job. A real looker, I put it on the most popular spot in town with for sale signs and had immediate reactions. I sold it in two days and then had my sister drive me back to Mikes house. Here Mike I’ve got the rest of the money. I drove the goat out of there with ear to ear grins. I couldn’t believe I pulled this off by keeping the fact that the car was for sale and my purchase plans under wraps so none of my other friends would jump in and buy it before me. Even my best friend who told me it may be for sale.

All my friends were in shock, I felt bad for Mike who was also a friend but if it wasn’t me who bought the car someone else would have. His parents were adamant he sell it as all it caused him was problems. Many tickets and losing his license in a very short time of him driving it and all the money he put in the motor rebuild. He was a good guy and didn’t hold any hard feelings about it and I rarely ran into him after that. He went off to college in another state and times were changing. On the occasions he did see it he was happy with what I had done to it. Paint, wheels and tires. A new 12 bolt posi. with 456 gears. Hurst dual gate shifter. It turned into a real 1/4 mile pounder that could back up its nasty street looks. This was all back in the early 1980’s.

These photos were taken after a -30°F week in Colorado. It finally broke into the 40°s. So I backed it out of the garage and washed it as my brother was in town visiting. He took the photos but not until I realized after they were developed that the drivers side back wheel was sitting in a hole [dirt driveway] so it messed the look of the stance from point of view taken. Point being It wasn’t this jacked up in the back. Still the best photos I have if it.

1 of 759 produced with the Ram Air IV motor in 1969.

found an old photo of my trans am. Photo was taken in April of 1999. I was born in 2002 lol.

All the cars in the driveway have a weird story. The 1998 ZJ Grand Cherokee, which my mom bought for herself after completing her doctorate degree, exploded in the culdesac of our street sometime in 2000 (nobody was in it), and the Eagle Vision in the background broke down and I’ve never seen one in person to this day.

Yeah, sorry. Kinda hard to tell a story that’s long and keep it short and have it make sense.

I was fortunate to be invited to visit a private car museum near here yesterday, 3 Dog Garage. I sent this pic back to my wife, who adores woodies.
