That is an excellent point. To be honest, at the point where I move to 17 inch aftermarket wheels I may just bite the bullet and go full send into wider 33" realm for more versatility among my Overland team. It would be difficult for me to want to spend $1300 in aftermarket wheels and not get into a more standard size of tire (as huge of a fan of the skinny's as I am).

Maybe if I can just pick up some 17" 4runner or Tacoma TRD Sport takeoffs on the cheap I will go that route as my winter tire/wheel setup! That would probably be worth it to me to get the more solid winter-reliability of the Wildpeaks or Toyo's as you suggested!

255s are superior to 285s in every way except floating on sand. I wouldn't bother with 285s if you like 255s.

Yeah and like I detailed in my post, I have run straight up and down and through the loose stuff in my 255/85r16 Yoko M/T's and have had zero issues at low PSI.

I thank you for bringing this forward to my attention, because I also didn't realize how much less expensive the 255/80r16 offerings are in those 3 peak tires as compared to the 285 counterparts! This is very encouraging and is definitely going to lead to me making a change in the next year. These Yoko's are amazing, just not for a PNW kid who wants to play it safe and be less squirrely on the wet and frozen stuff :p

Cool. Fair warning, the Toyo AT3s are very narrow in 255. I would not go above a 7" rim width.

That is good to know, I have been sticking with stock wheels from Toyota anyways just to stay on the less expensive side. I have never had to air down below 8 or 9 PSI in any of the offroading I have done, so the stock wheels work for me.

Almost a couple years later and Falken has fulfilled my hopes and dreams! The AT4W is available in 255/85r16 size! The Yoko’s are still doing well but I just won’t even attempt ice or old snow in them anymore. They are just slippery and dangerous in that stuff. As they start to wear more, I am going to go for the AT4W’s for my next set!
