Haven't tried it. I've been a flippo berio user for decades. Just like its mild flavor for frying, or use in salads. They have a couple different viscosities.

Heard Avocado oil handles heat better, better off using that down here in FL or the rest of the Deep South….

I just go to the dealer and get the Toyota oil, it is not anymore costly than other places around me and I also use Toyota oil filters. They are almost half the price of a Wix. The parts counter guy told me that the oil is Mobil 1 anyway. As far as the filers are concerned, my belief is that they are as good as the top brands. If they are not then I welcome any input that they are substandard filters.

Toyota oil is made by Mobil but is a Toyota exclusive formula, check out post #6 in this thread.

Although many folks may steadfastly maintain that their brand of choice is "better or best" the truth is that any product that meets the published specifications and is changed at appropriate intervals will protect the engine just fine.

    Is the Toyota oil better?
My personal take is that Toyota could have chosen to use an off the shelf product and simply put their name on it, instead they chose to have a product manufactured to their exclusive specifications.

It is convenient to obtain and reasonably priced so I use it.

Most major oils are very similar formulas with additives falling into a "normal" range including molybdenum.
Toyota oil is generally very close with one MASSIVE difference, molybdenum is astronomically higher then pretty much every brand out there. Measured in PPM (parts per million) almost all major oils are up to around 90 PPM.

This is where the Toyota branded product stands out with molybdenum around 700 ppm.
Not double or triple other leading brands but almost 7X as high.

So yes, I guess their product is indeed special.

As far as advertising goes, beyond the standard for every manufacturer owners manual statement of "Use Toyota approved "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity" I have never seen any claim by Toyota that their product is different or superior than any other brand.

My point being Toyota (engineers) obviously had their reasons for this particular non typical formula and it wasn't for advertising purposes (they don't) nor was it for higher profits as the product is priced in line with mass market products.

It also has a much higher VI than anything else on the market. The old Idemitsu Ecomoly was essentially the same formula but I don’t think it exists anymore.

I gotta wonder if your engine can really tell those minute difference's.

very simple thing we can do.

ask all the guys that have 300k mile tacomas. what did they run.

most of them run whatever was on sale at the time.

oil is oil. you running the best oil out there is a huge waste of money. you are getting no benefits.

that said....everyone has a preference. i run mobil1. its $26 at wallyworld...and i feel like my engine is the most quiet with mobil1. i ran kirkland oil for 2 cycles and felt like my valvetrain was louder with it. still fine though.

Exactly my thoughts, including the valve train noise comment. The only difference I’ve ever seen between oils is in some engines, valvetrain noise can be related to the oil used. But that’s it. Hell, the engines I’ve run 200-300k have all been on 90s era havoline.

Pertaining to the Toyota branded product I wouldn't consider 7X the molybdenum to be a minute difference.

Apparently Toyota engineers thought it was important, good enough for me.

I ran Havoline back then for years then it seemed to drift off the market, switched to Motorcraft which was a great oil at a budget price (no advertising).
After some years suddenly the Motorcraft price shot up equal to or past the more famous brands.

I crack up every time I see this stupid statement. Where did Toyota find these God like engineers?

I’ll just stick with the OEM Toyota oil and change it every 5,000, which is in between the free ones at 10,000 for the next 2 years. No way in hell am I going 10,000 miles on any dang oil. And I’ll stick with the OEM filters too.

Can you make an intelligent one as to why the Toyota product differs from all other mass market products?

I only used mobil1 from Wally World for nearly 300k miles, and 19 years on my last toyota pickup while doing a yearly oil change so it can't be all that bad. Truck is still running fine today, just with another owner. How Long to you guys expect to own the same truck?

Yes, you are fond of saying that, it has been well established, thank you. :deadhorse:

As has been previously stated "any quality product that meets published specifications should do an adequate job of protecting the engine".

The original post specifically asked about the Toyota branded product with the outstanding difference between it and mass market products being the very high molybdenum content.

The question that has yet to be answered is: "Why did Toyota choose this very specific difference from mass market products?"

BTW: This is my end of life truck so (hopefully) I will keep it a long time. ;)

They wouldn't be in business for very long if they advertised it as crap.
