Wrecked my daily. I’m ok, no one was involved.

    Hey 1st gen peeps,

I was on my way to work this morning lost control in some rain, and crashed into a tree. Thankfully I’m ok and no one else was involved.

i don’t have collision on this truck, but from what I can see it doesn’t look too bad? Can y’all let me know what looks like needs to be replaced and ballpark prices or where I can order parts?

I drove the rest of the way to work and it ran as usual. Some tire rub from the plastic bits in the wheel well. But I’ll know more when I drive it home later.

    thanks in advance!!

Looks like you just need a fender and hood, assuming it still drives straight and nothing got bent in the suspension or steering

I would just keep an eye out for a used fender and hood, could probably get them both for under $500 used. Easy DIY job, just nuts and bolts. They sell aftermarket ones too for pretty cheap but fitment can be a little less than perfect, and you'd have to paint them.

Those RCSB 1st gen tacoma's can easily spin tires, especially in the rain! Had so much fun in mine when I was 16 lol

I don't know if you plan on doing this yourself, but my guess would be that it would be $2,000-$3,000 through a body shop. This is exactly why I have collision and comprehensive on my 2010; I was involved in a freak accident at a scrapyard 15 months ago that wasn't my fault, and the scrapyard's insurance paid for it. My passenger door had to be replaced, and there was also some fixable damage to the rear fender and a bit of paintwork. Total was about three grand. Insurance companies very rarely pay for brand new OEM parts, especially on older vehicles, and buy parts from totaled trucks. This is where my door came from. To be sure that you are getting genuine Toyota parts, your best bet would be to buy parts online from a totaled truck and have them shipped to you, then have a body shop do the installation and paint work.

I updated my original post with more pics of the inside. Is she bent?? What are your thoughts on repairability and safety if the frame is fixed if it’s bent?

The frame is probably the least of your concerns. Probably the fender bits, including the inner parts, as well as the hood could be replaced with junkyard parts.

I would be very careful with your left sided suspension components, make sure nothing is broken.

Does it drive straight like before? If you bent the frame you would know it when you drove it. It's more likely something in the suspension (control arm, spindle, tie rod, etc.) would get bent and those are easily replaceable.

First mission, if you are going to keep driving it, is to buy a set of tires that do not slide so easily in a little rain...........

yeah, you’re right. I have some BF Goodrich tires on there. They have good tread… just a freaky accident. First time spinning out of control like that! Such a bummer.

I took it to shop #1 and they quoted me 5k. Said the hood, fender, alignment, radiator support, and apron needed to be repaired.

I’m hoping the second shop comes in much lower and that I’m able to have either of them fix the apron and radiator support. Then I’ll handle the rest of the cosmetic stuff… prices in Marin county are wild for labor so that’s not helping me there.

I’m bummed. But thankful that no one else was involved for sure. But still… damn man.

    Good thing you're ok.

Your truck looks to be in mint shape, I just have to ask why don't you have collision? I can't ever comprehend that one.

Glad you are ok and can put it back together.

Keep in mind that 'good tread' isn't the only traction critera to consider. Compound of the tire ages with sun, heat, heat cycles. Usually by the time a tire is about 5 years old it's approaching the need for replacement, even if it has low mileage and tread that measures ok.

Check the date stamps on your tires to see how old they might be. If not familiar with that, TireRack has a great page that deciphers all the markings on a tire.

    Best of luck!

… yeah man, I’m kicking myself for not adding it. I have no excuse, so now I’ll have to deal with it. I’m not sure if I can add it once the repairs are done, but hopefully I can. The truck was MINT absolutely babied, so I’m pretty bummed. It’s just a thing, but I’m sure y’all get it.

That sucks, hopefully you can bring it back to speed in no time.

Was it your choice to not have collision? I ask cause there's at least one thread a week where someone has had an accident only to not have collision on it.

    Thanks man, me too!

it was my decision. But kinda swayed by my State Farm rep. They fed a line about it being so old, blah blah blah. I mean it wouldn’t have added much to my premium. Life rips.

Oh dude...I have State Farm and dealing with a wrecked Tundra atm. Every shop has told me they're the worst...and so far my experience has agreed. As soon as the Tundra is fully sorted, I'm switching insurance.

I’m starting to feel the same way. They said there’s nothing they could do. My wife hit a car while parking earlier this year and they were such a pain.

might be time to switch it up!

I would not use a shop in Marin, drive and save the money that way, PITA but you should be able to find a great shop in Oakland or close by. Great little truck, I’ll probably end up with one soon for a daily too. Find someone to fix what you can’t or don’t want to and get back on the road.
