Who here has done rear mount radiator and trans coolers? I need some inspiration and details on what you did. Im not sure I'll have enough room up front for a radiator with the LS in there. Wouldn't be a horrible idea to relocate it anyhow. Someone school me on this.

There was a discussion on y-straps awhile back that i cant seem to find. I remember a couple people saying some weren’t holding up too well near the coast. Rust or pitting or something. Any suggestions?

After installing the tundra rack from Travis, it’s apparent my motor mounts are shot.

    Any preference as to?

    • Solid Off-road (I’ve heard varying fitment Issues)
    • DMZ (most pricey but I’d trust their fitment and build a over all other options + has trans mount as well)
    • Martec (easiest on the wallet and looks to be easier to install as well)
•PRG products (kinda the same as Martec but has a slightly larger bolt and a few bucks more $)

I would imagine you could add some tubes up and mount it however you want.

my biggest thing is I wouldn’t mount it flat since you’ll get no fresh air in from there, and I haven’t had any issues with temperature since doing this so far… big thing was getting the biggest radiator and fans I could (well one down from the biggest Ron Davis makes but still). The bigger the fans the better for sure.

@Pittsy are you caging your truck? I don't see a cage and you said you have the pre-built DMZ cage so I'm guessing you're building a cruiser instead of a built truck like @tacotunner06 at least for the meantime.

If you're caging it, yeah putting your coolers in the airflow would help and you'd be probably flogging your engine and trans more too which would make more sense to maximize cooling in that way too.

If you're running your truck as a multipurpose rig, running a cooler in the bed is pretty normal. It could fit under the front of the cage depending on what version of the DMZ cage you have is. One of the cooler (heh) little things I've seen on a Kibbetech video (hey you run out of truck related content on YoutTube at some point), is where he cut holes in the front of the bed for tranny coolers where they get air here:

    https://youtu.be/_E8rl-9AWyY?t=146

I'd almost think even making a removable / replaceable opening in the bed (to seal it up in inclement weather and open during desert runs) and placing your cooler under the cage a couple inches away would still significantly increase air flow. What trans are you putting in your rig?

It’s going to have the 4x internal roll cage, just gotta find someone to weld it up in the truck, but it’s not going to tie in to the rear bed cage at all. Not quite on the level of backhalving this truck yet.

I was thinking if something like that for a full blown radiator + trans cooler where holes in the front of the bed are cut out for a fresh air supply, and it’s exhausted into the bed where the tires are.

The transmission is a built 4L60E, good for like 900 WHP. Need to keep that shitbox cool if I want it to not explode lol.

I’m just hoping that trans holds together for you. One of my buddies had one built like 3 times and it never did stop auto dismantling…

Dont matter what you put into a 4L60E it'll wreck itself. Just go 4L80 with a manual valve body. Especially behind a decent engine

    Too many to remember
There is no such thing a as a 4l60 that can handle 900HP off road. For reference take whatever they say the “street rated HP” is and cut that in half off road. The 60’s explode because the internal components can’t handle the off road shock load, not from heat. The cases are also weak and are prone to cracking. The heat generation is a function of the converter stall and you will need to size your coolers based on the stall you choose. Be prepared to spend $10k+ for an auto trans setup (4l80) if you want it to last more than a couple trips

Me too. Monster transmissions built it, I’ll send it back for a TR6060 or something if it blows.

I got the 4L60E with the LS6 and Holley for a smoking deal. I’d rather install it and deal with a potential new trans in the future. Besides, gives me a good excuse to swap a manual back into the truck.

the LS6 is rated at 400 crank, I’m leaving the LS stock so by that logic we should be alright. Don’t get me wrong, I get your point. I’m not ecstatic about putting the 4L60E in it, but I already have it, so might as well use it. I think I’m just gonna throw the largest coolers I can fit in it and see how it fairs. If it blows I’ll put a TR6060 in it like I was saying above.

4l60’s can’t survive behind a stock 5.3 lol. They are literal garbage. Same as the 6l80. Get a 4l80 and call it a day.

also, the 4x cage is probably the most dangerous cage I’ve ever put eyes on.
