Yeah. I'm starting to like it now. It kind of makes me want to order a Coastal Off-road high clearance rear bumper and just full send the no swingout lyfe, but that's a next winter sort of project.

Worst case scenario, I could fabricated a spare tire mount to insert into the rear bumper hitch.

Does save a ton of weight and leverage wear with no swingout. I actually had to send my BAMF swingarm that my 35" spare was on, back to get beefed/replaced after KOH this year. I cracked it bombing some trails.. just a lot to ask for of a swingarm with all that overhanging weight. I need my bed space though unfortunately.

The convenience of a swing out is why I keep it, water/fuel/spare all things I want to bring and take up a lot of space. I’ve considered taking it off for trips through the rubicon but never have. I’d be curious how much of a difference it would make. I know taking my camper shell off makes a noticeable difference

I leave it on for the same reasons. I have payed with removing tire and mount and cans and seems to be more than what it weighs since it’s all hanging off. plus my truck is now setup for heavy weight and removing it all would introduce opposite issues of being too stiff with no swingout or no camper if I removed it temporarily. I’m considering going work a less beefy pack so that’s more of an option.

I used to have my spare tire in the overhang of my camper. Which would be approximately where a swing out would put it but maybe a little higher.
I moved to the middle/front of the camper just in front of the axle to see if it made a difference in how the truck handles.
It's still in the middle. It's so much better there.
My truck still handles like a covered wagon but it's much better.

The downside is that tire is ALWAYS in the way.

Edit: I moved all the heavy stuff between the axles...mostly batteries, spare tire, water, fridge and beer.

Same.. I need the space and convenience and having tables on each swingout is a huge Pro as well. I did have my leaf's re-arched specifically for the truck's newly added weight of the camper and bumper, so when I even just took the one swingarm + 35" spare off.. I could feel the difference with that weight not being there/where it normally would be. Even with moving the spare into the bed and strapping it upright, I can feel the difference.. the weight is there, but now in a different location and distributes said weight differently. I cant wait to get all my parts back so I can get it back to normal.

Anyone taking their swingout off in solidarity up in the PNW can donate it to me. I'm tired of lifting a 35 in and out of my bed to get to stuff

Ah damn. I shaved close to 75lbs off since my swingout is build out of 1/4" material lol

I've already noticed the handling difference. I actually think I'll like it once I get the spring rates dialed and shocks tuned properly.

Would recommend trying it out. I actually dig the change so far.

I'm with you there. Ideally I'd want everything towards the cab for weight, but the amount of room that I don't have there is unsurprisingly, very little.

I might actually sell my rear bumper and swingout later this year depending on if I like the change enough. :spy:

I keep my 13g water tank, tools, spare parts, etc against the cab side in the bed to try and keep the weight as centered and low as possible. Its really just the damn spare tire.

I want to see if I can get my bumper made in a hybrid style to shave a bunch of weight off. in theory it will work but well see.

I’d pull my fingernails out one by one before I ran a swing out all the time. I literally couldn’t imagine having to move it every time I want to drop the tailgate. I even have one now that’s cut off and rusting away next to the shop for my second gen lol

I was worried about that too when trying to decide to order the rear bumper or not.. but with side access it hasnt been a problem.. but the truck is also a dedicated toy now. I could see how having a swingout on a daily driver might get annoying tho.

    Also +1 on this.
Won’t be running a spare tire swing out this go around. Too much weight off the ass. I will be doing a swing out as a means for extra security on the FlipPac and to hold some traction boards and Rotopax, but definitely no spare tire weight back there.

Damn, that's a lot more weight that I was originally thinking. 13g of water is a while amount, but I guess it makes sense if you're on the road a lot for a long duration of time.

That's a neat idea. I likely will just build all new armor this coming winter and make it all out of 1.75" DOM tube. Save as much weight as possible.

This is another big reason for me as well. Too many times where I've wanted to used the tailgate and I've had to move forward 4 feet just to open it.

+1 with no swingout. When my spare was on my swingout, I was riding bumpstops in the rear without any gear in the back. As soon as I moved it to the front of the bed vertically, I have yet to ride the bumpstops even when fully loaded with passengers and stuff. Going to remove my spare tire swingout when I stop being lazy. Planning to keep the driver side swingout for gas and propane however.

I was never a fan of how tube rear bumpers looked but I've been debating it just to shave weight on the rear end.

+1 to no swing out. Been running mine on the side of the bed for years. Gone through a couple iterations but ultimately it's one bolt holding it in and like a fin that keeps it vertical. So far haven't seen the bed crack from it.

We got tired of worrying, having to stop, or planning a route to find water to refill on our long trips. 5g wasnt enough for us both for a week+. I've tried to plan and layout the build to keep weight dispersed pretty evenly and have been able to keep my dry/wet weights very similar. The truck weighs ~6500lbs and only fluctuates around 200lbs. I keep some water in it all the time, then fill it up on our long trips.. plus food, drinks, gear/clothing, etc. Everything else is already ready and in the truck. If I could just change where a lot of that weight is (hanging off the back) I'd be ok with the weight and everything. If I could come up with a way to stuff my 35 under the truck.. I'd do that.

I like to carry about 8 gallons plus a few 12 packs of La Croix for extended trips to the desert for just myself.
Add in another person and 13 gallons is completely reasonable.

8 gallons of LaCroix sounds dangerous. Ever opened one of them at altitude haha
