    Hey all!

2022 Manual Trans Tacoma TRD Sport, 5ft bed. 8,500 miles.

During acceleration in any gear, around 1,500-2,000 RPM, I get an intermittent, rotational, light metallic rattle sound.. almost like a can of small bolts being shaken. (Not during shifting, but while firmly in gear)

It seems to be something other than the normal clunky shifting sounds people speak about. (I’ve only found posts about this, not the noise I’m experiencing)

    Anyone else experience this?
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

I’m going to bump this! I have 14,000 miles now, and it’s still making the same sound. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

I took it in. They said they couldn’t replicate the noise. It’s something a tech will really have to listen closely to, after driving for a half hour or so.

Has it gotten worse since first noticing it?

I’m at 41k miles and if I press clutch over potholes it sounds like a can with flying metal pieces. Almost every time I go 1-2 or even 2-3 it makes sounds…. I stopped caring… I have to depress clutch slower so it doesn’t do
It but it does not feel natural to do so I stopped caring… all good here… Miami Fl… no hills, no way of burning clutch in excess…

About 7600 miles on my '22 6mt, I've started hearing this now that the weather is warm enough to drive with the windows down. I don't remember hearing it when driving in september/october/early november.

Usually pressed in, when shifting is when I've noticed. 1-2, 2-3 then road and wind noise are too loud to hear it

    ^This...
Assuming you've eliminated the possibility of a pebble or two banging around on top of a heat shield...

    - Or a loose heat shield which is getting some movement.

Are you driving on bumpy roads? The rattling described in #6 I noticed from day 1 driving on a washout road. Rolling in neutral on a dirt road makes the truck sound like a tin can. 3rd manual Tacoma, first to ever sound like that, but apparently it’s normal if that’s what you’re hearing. If you’re only noticing it when the clutch is in, or in neutral you’re probably hearing the same thing. There’s a few vids on YouTube that pretty clearly demonstrate it. I saw someone say a while back the remedied it with a new TOB that apparently had better tolerances. What were hearing is slop.

    this is what I’m describing

    Nope! The same.

I, too, hear it with the windows down, except what I’m talking about sounds like a very light rattle, not the normal clunking we all have.

The pedal is not depressed at all. The sound comes when accelerating under load.

I have that in addition to a light metallic sound. I’m going to check for pebbles in the heat shield . It would make sense for pebbles/heat shield to rattle when the trans is under load at low rpm, causing vibrations throughout the truck as a whole.

Also - I saw this in another thread on here. (See attached photo)

Is the inspection boot the boot on the shift knob?

Two weeks back I started getting the same noise - it's happened 2 or 3 times at low speed. I have 43k miles. I checked under the hood at my power/accessory set up but all is tight. I'm thinking something is loose underside, but I'll take note of speed and rpm next time. Maybe some cat-thief didn't finish the job?

Does it happen primarily when easing off the throttle? I have heard a metallic sound on all cylinders when getting off the throttle around 2,000 RPM. I think it's too regular to be pinging and is normal operation. Typical scenario is: ~2,000 RPM, mild incline, and I lean into it a bit. Truck pulls great and isn't bogging. I back off the "throttle" a bit and the engine briefly sounds metallic on all cylinders for about half a second. I have my thoughts on what it probably is and that it's a normal characteristic.

Yes, whiseve! This is EXACTLY what I'm experiencing. What are your thoughts on what it might be?
