Pay extra close attention to the Officer Safety training, and pay close attention to your Field Training Officers and you will do fine. One word of advice, as Officers meet you and get to know you be humble. If not, you will gain a reputation, and better to start off on the right foot, and not come off as someone who thinks they know it all. Good luck out there!

I understand that completely, I see a lot of people like that in firefighting and I understand how quickly reputation starts, luckily I think I am pretty humble in these lines of work. I know that I know nothing and I know I never will know everything, I also know to just shut my mouth and do as I am instructed, especially when starting out. I am extremely excited to go through this, I am eager to go through every step of the academy. I am going to get paid great to learn all about this job and train.

I was an MP in the ARMY for 4yrs. Looking forward to working for CMPD. My girl hates it. She says everytime I walk out the door she hates not knowing if i'm going to make it back home. But she's got to deal with it because I was an MP when she met me.

I would be more concerned with my own psyche, you're going to see a lot of shit when you start working the field. I've walked in on a guy shooting up his 1.5 month old baby girl with crack. I would of shot him if it wasn't for my partner Svoboda. I've also seen decapitated bodies, dad's who molest their daughters, people who abuse their kids (At fort brag we actually arrested a Marine couple who killed their baby because they spraid Pepper spray in their babies mouth which caused the babies throat to close and he sufficated). Anyways, get ready to deal with shit like that and spend a few sleepless nights.

Congrats to ya bud! Seek out as much officer safety training as your department will allow. Your academy training only goes so far. Be proficient in the use of your equipment and never forget your mind is the most powerful tool you have on the job. Arrive safe so you can help others... never push the response envelope too far. Be skeptical of everyone, no matter how "nice" they seem to be. Your safety is paramount, job 1.

^ Tis very good advice. The exact phrase relayed to me by my old buddy Corporal C. He has long since retired and I'll never forget him. You'll meet a large number of officers in your career. Take something positive from each one, leave the bad traits behind and you'll be a better officer for it. After nearly 21 years, the best advice I can give is to never let the authority go to your head. You are sworn to protect and serve, you are not above the law... no better than anyone else. Your credibility makes you on this job, just like in your day to day life. It means everything.

The new hires... I have seen all types. Day one tells me where they reside. They all get the "window treatment." Stand by the entry wall and look through the glass that provides a view of the parking lot. Tell me if you see a group of people with their hands raised standing in line, hoping to be the victim of a crime so they can come in here for your help. The ones that come to you on your watch didn't want to seek you out. No matter how horrible or how trivial their problems are, you owe it to every citizen to utilize all the resources at your disposal to correct what wrongs have befallen them. Take a personal pride in your work, know when to be compassionate, when to be stern and when to be humble. You'll be the one they seek out when the hands are raised.

Good stuff here. I'm fresh out of the ranger academy. I start my first gig as an LE Park Ranger at Grand Canyon as soon as my background check clears - 6-8 weeks.

Congrats! I love the Grand Canyon and camped at Mather a few years back. I think I've got pics posted in my Gallery.

Didn’t realize there was a LEO section on this forum. I have been in Law Enforcement for going on three years now. New to Tacoma world but not new to tacomas as this is the fourth one I have owned. Nice to see other officers that appreciate a good truck when they see one!
