Essentially when cars crash with the side of a tractor trailer or other large commercial vehicles, then they can get pinned and dragged under until everything stops moving. Additional, because the collision point is higher in those types of crashes, the cars crumple zone is not absorbing impact and in turn directing tbay crash energy into the passenger cabin. Rear underride protections on trailers are mandated in the US (also called the mansfield bar) but there are no side underride regulations. The goal here was to design a side underride system before side underride regulations are required in the next few years.

So that picture is a top down view of a 1/4 scale underride model in a scaled energy collision in a T-bone style collision. The wooden block in the center represents the front of a car and is loosely based size-wise on a Corolla front crash bar. The black thing is the frame rail representation and used for fixturing it to the crash tester. This test was equivalent to Toyota Corolla T-bone at 35mph.

$57k is the starting price on the Raptor, and we can't see what that includes or you can / have to add on. ZR2 is 48k, adding everything except the Desert Boss special edition (mostly graphics) package adds another $9300, exceeding the starting price for the Ford. I don't need the graphics and don't like chase bars, so I wouldn't order it.

Since I'm not looking, it doesn't really matter. I just have a hard time paying that price for a midsize truck, or most other vehicles. The Taco will do fine till the wheels fall off, and if I did anything at all it would probably be a full size truck. I like the Taco, but miss some of the interior (head) room.

Did you look at the 2023? The ZR2 is $53k to start. After you've deleted the automatically added Desert Boss package.

I thought I did. Adding on most of the convenience packages brought it to $51k, adding on the ones I didn't would probably hit $53k.

Sounds more like the 2022. It's still on the site configurator. The 2023 is $63k to start and then you can remove the Desert Boss package.
