Vent?

 

I believe that I found the actual location of the active vent, but found no evidence that it was active any longer (smoke rising, for example)...

 

I don’t exactly know what an active vent is?
Like air from the crack in the ground?

 

So, I don't know how much you know about Centralia, but a fire was started in a garbage dump on Memorial Day in 1962 (on purpose, to burn off the garbage). It spread into a coal mine and ignited the coal veins underground. Manmade vents resembling stovepipes in metal mesh garbage cans were shoved into the ground around Centralia to "vent" the underground fire; I have been to Centralia at least half a dozen times since February 2022, and have yet to find any signs of the underground fire, which leads me to believe that it is dying off. Either way, the government started offering people money for their homes and businesses, and some people started leaving in the early 1980s. In 1993, eminent domain was declared and a few remaining residents not only refused to leave, but sued the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 2013, they won the right to stay until their deaths. The Commonwealth holds the deeds to half dozen or so remaining homes in Centralia, and those homes will be torn down once the residents pass away or decide to move out for whatever reason.

I found a second abandoned garage by accident, though this one was in far better condition than the one on 61 that is largely collapsed. Aside from the obvious lack of a roof, this one seemed to be in remarkably good condition!

I remember reading something about that, but didn’t recall it being Centralia.
I’ve heard this can potentially happen if you burn stump in certain parts of the U.S.
It may not be true, but my mothers side of the family is from WV. And I’ve heard the tale more than once. Although, I’ve never heard of a case where burning a stump caused any real danger under ground? But I’ve also never looked.
