This thread is pretty funny, both of our vehicles are 6MT as are all of our son's cars; my Taco has become the preferred "can I borrow your ride" vehicle; of course when my son borrows the Tacoma, I get to drive his GR86. :)

And yes, I'm in a "relationship", my wife and I have been together for over 30 years; our 30th wedding anniversary is next January. :)

I’m old and the reason I bought a Tacoma is other than the Jeep faux truck there’s no other manual anymore .
I grew up with a rusted 57 Chevy “3100” six cylinder “3 on the tree” and wanted what will no doubt be my last truck to be a manual like my first.
To give a idea of time ,that truck was 75$ ,burned oil like crazy ,I burned GULF oil , straight “30 “weight at 60 cents a quart can that needed a church key to open then dump in and all over the valve cover.
Wood floor bed that was mostly rotted out but the most fun truck I ever owned ( maybe till now).
I did own a early model hilux for a while in the early 80’s that was a 4 cyl.4 speed rust bucket also.

I have a 2020 with low miles and my 3rd gear seems to have a little bit of whine sound when accelerating. Is it normal? Does yours do it also? Thanks

How many of you guys are running some sort of short throw shifter and have done the accumulator delete? Just got my new Tacoma this week and have seen some good information about the accumulator delete but haven't seen many people running a STS. Excited to finally get my truck after it got stuck in a 2 month "QC Hold" down in Veracruz

Is the whine from the rear diff or the actual transmission?

I installed the URD Short Shifter set up 5 years ago. It has been perfect. There are other options now though... Core sells one now too. If you aren’t happy with the long throw, both reduce it by approximately half.

Correction, there is one thing that trumps the market in determining supply, and that's regulation. It's regulation that is primarily responsible for the push that we see for electric vehicles, not the market. Not denying Tesla's success, but EVs would remain a niche produce for much longer were it not for regulation. Inevitably the regulations forcing EVs will eliminate the MT.

Ah yes. Back in 1982 my future wife bought a yellow Ford Fiesta as her first personally owned car even though she couldn't drive the manual. She bought it an hour away and I taught her on the way home. She took to it like a duck to water and we've never owned an auto since.

    She's so fine.

I did, 23 years ago. She loved driving my truck.

A few years back we picked up a 2 seat convertible, a Solstice GXP with a manual. She drove it but didn't like it having a MT.

Now she can drive my truck but avoids it if she can, she even wanted to take the 17yr old daughters 240,000 mile Prius C instead of my truck...

I tried once before and she didn't really have interest. That was on a Scion tC. Now we pick up our 6MT tacoma on Tuesday so she wants to learn.

Anyone know if you can rent a manual transmission car? I don't want to teach her on my clutch :)

I have the URD short throw shifter and also did the accumulator delete on my 2019 OR. Love the way the truck shifts. One added benefit of the STS is that it takes a much more deliberate action to put it in reverse. I always hated how easy it was to go over to reverse instead of 1st.

I taught my wife to drive on my '01 M5. She did good in parking lots, but then was never confident enough to drive around town. That car was easy to learn on with a nice tourquey V8 and a fairly short 1st gear.

She tried driving my taco around the neighborhood recently and did not do too well. It's a bummer because I really want to get a sports sedan with a MT but the current rules in our house are that I can only have one MT vehicle. I guess I'll have to trade in the taco for a brown, diesel, stick wagon.

Take her on a trip to Europe; renting manual transmissions over there is easy.

FWIW, my wife and I visited Iceland last summer; renting a car from the likes of Hertz and Avis, which only offer cars with automatic transmissions, was over $1,200 per day! I rented a car from Europcar for only $450, and yes, it had a manual transmission. :)

That doesn't seem cheaper than a new clutch though, but I like the option...

Does the accumulator delete have any long term negative effect on the system? Did Toyota put the valve there for a specific purpose for longevity?

Turo is good for this, but might not have massive selection in non-metro areas like KY. In the tri state region where I was thinking of going through Turo instead of a rental company, there was a surprising selection of both premium and s**tboxes in MT.

The one stick rule isn't terrible, shoot, I'm tempted to trade my 3rd gen for a diesel Ram, but perhaps exceptions can be made for 2 seater vehicles as non-family-friendly, given adequate parking space (which is my main limiter).
