there is a lot of oil in alberta and saskatchewan. i'm pretty sure us residents don't own the oil unless its on private property.

So does it directly benefit Western Canadians in the form of more money? Don't mean to press, but I really have no clue how it works there. Or do I need to move this to the "Ask a Canadian" thread?

i'm not 100% sure on this but here in saskatchewan the oil companies pay taxes and they have to pay the government fees. here is a link to show how much it benefits us. http://saskatoon.ctv.ca/servlet/an/...arter-province-110304/20110304/?hub=Saskatoon

"Growth and Financial Security Fund" sounds similar to Alaska's Permanent Fund. Alaska pays all residents a dividend every year based on the fund's performance over a five year period (if I remember correctly). Sounds like in Canada they use it all to straight out fund improvements and infrastructure. Still not a bad deal. Sometimes wonder if we'd be better off doing the same, but people around here get crazy if you talk about taking away their dividend check. Yet various levels of government talk about increasing property taxes and threatening sales taxes all the time.

 $3.87 / US gallon showed up down the road from me (40 miles north of Anchorage). My usual Chevron station in Palmer was $3.78. ($1.00 / litre)
