The curse of being so well off that one can afford to buy a new vehicle comes with the blessing of getting to be the first to find which parts of the some 18000 (rough number given to me by the dealer) used to construct your vehicle are flawed or put together poorly. It's why all new vehicles come with warranties.

What about the earlier post referencing the chin spoiler present or not present...

So I guess all the internal grinding they said was happening was a farce?

My truck is quieter than a church mouse with the chin spoiler attached. Not so much if its driven without it.

the rear diff is very sensitive during break-in. you want to make sure the gears mesh well. no hard driving. and change the fluid at 500 miles. mine was filled with metal shavings.

I liken it to when someone in a car cracks just one window open... They create what's called a Helmholtz resonance with the resultant buffeting. Seems to me, with all the trapped air cavities under the truck, if you open the window (i.e. remove the spoiler), one shouldn't be surprised if similar buffeting occurs.

My stock 3rd gen (2wd Sport doublecab) rear end whine experiences:

    - 2016 Sport built during month 1 of production. Whined from day one. Differential replacements did not help. TSB with cab isolator rubber bushing helped a bit. Vehicle was bought back due to numerous problems
    - 2018 Sport - zero noise in over 120K miles
    - 2020 Sport - zero noise in 101K miles
    - 2023 Sport - zero noise. Vehicle is 2 weeks old with 1K miles

I am not a hot shot delivery driver. Retired and drive to alternate out of state homes

Same thing happenned to me, have a 22 OR 4x4, have taken in it to the dealer 3 times already. Fist it was categorized as wind noise from the tires, then after the noise got slightly worse took it back only to have it inspected and returned to me without any repair / modification. Took it back 2 weeks ago, tech diagnosed a faulty rear diff, put a complete new one on and the noise came back 100 miles later...

Since I bought this truck in CA, I was thinking of probably having it replaced or refunded under the lemon law.

One thing I’ll tell you is they are the most over rated vehicles on the road. Some people love them and some people hate them. They have TONS of annoying quirks and plenty of known actual issues. Good luck though

The dealer diagnosing the diff as “faulty” is the problem. The noise is a harmonics issue. There are plenty of dealers who say they hear “grinding” and other odd noises. They replace the diff and nothing at all changes. If you like your truck just live with it. If you don’t then get rid of it. It’s not a lemon law issue though. Although you may be able to get away with it anyways since the dealer has repeatedly changed diffs for you.

I still think its the carrier bearing just below our plastic beds. Big speaker.
Would be interesting if those who had the one piece driveshaft mod still have the howl

take it to a different dealer….. not all these trucks have this noise. It’s not a standard thing. That crap ain’t right.
Also one key to making the gears last is changing the diff fluid. No driver line shop will put a set of gears in and not mention anything about breaking and fluid change. Fluid is changed within a couple hundred miles.

I changed my rear diff fluid at 150 miles then at 5000 I changed front rear and transfer case fluids. Gears, breaking in, will put a lot of debris into the fluid. Do you want to get that crap out as soon as possible.

I have a 2017 SR MT. The rear diff howl started at about 10K miles. Backing off the throttle, at higher speeds is the trigger.
I applied an undercoating of Fluid Film and the howl stopped. About 8 months later the howl started to come back. Reapplied Fluid Film and the howl stopped. This pattern has continued to the present with the same results.

I posted my diff howl situation on another thread. Others reported a similar positive experience appliying Fluid Film or Wool Wax. Although, one poster reported that in his case the howl increased after he applied Fluid Film.

Wondering how the mechanic determined the gears are grinding . Did they drain the fluids and see metal shavings ? Yours must of been louder than most . I’m sitting at 45k mine howls at certain speeds not always . Everything working like it should and had the differential service done no metal shavings of any kind .
