I towed this 8k miles last year, 5,000lb loaded. Hopefully newer gen transmission will have torque converter lock up in 3rd gear.

That's not what Toyota does. They have explained time and time again there not looking at trying to beat everyone on the spec sheet. They put the tundra engine in the Tacoma then someone just one ups them the next year. Toyota doesn't play those games. The competition always finds a way to tweak something here and there and then there class leading in whatever the next year.

That is the estimated city/hwy numbers for the Lexus 500h. Which has a hybridized 2.4l turbo 4cly

And it weighs more then a 3rd gen

Will Mike Sweers likely speak next Friday?

I can't decide if I like that guy or not.

Given how erratic my trans is just towing my small moto trailer, and having the bed full of crap. No way I would attempt towing that TT. Weird, the same load in my less power 1st Gen manual trans didn’t bother me. Should have ponied up the extra $5K and got a Sport with the manual.

Have towed earth moving equipment in a past life, so used to towing heavy. All of those dump trucks were manuals. If I am pulling a grade, like to stick it a gear and stay there, even if I have to drive slow. The Taco’s trans doesn’t know what to do, even in S mode. Doing something that could be done in 4th, and wants to bounce to and fro between 3rd. Ok guess we are going it 3rd…

Before our trip I reset the ECU’s and the trans learnt how i tow. Can pull along quite nicely in 5th at 63mph/1,700rpm (without ECT). Just did the pull from Phoenix to Flagstaff with the 5,000lb TT, a 6kft+ elevation gain averaged 11.5mpg up there on the 150mile leg. The only thing I wish for is the torque converter locked in 3rd.

Good to hear. Lived in AZ for 20 years, know that route quite well. Was going to get a tune, fear it would void my warranty.

Maybe I need to reset mine. Around town it is great. Even doing little day trips with the trailer, with virtually no load, it is very sensitive to the slightest change, couple degrees of a grade or slight headwind it is constantly shifting.

You’re probably right. After all, Toyota did tell us repeatedly that Tundra Pro owners didn’t even want a rear locker, until they installed one in ‘22.

Then again, there’s also the Toyota that turbo’d a 3cyl an inch from exploding, stuffed it under the hood of a Corolla hatchback complete w AWD & manual. After that, who’d be offended by a simple 3.4T dropped into a 55k TRD Pro?

Halo trucks are not my thing personally, but Ford/GM/Stellantis like to keep score and I guarantee that Toyota’s engineers do too. They want to beat ZR2/Raptor. And that’s good for us.

I was thinking about a tune, likely would have gone with kdmax, but at $500 I didn’t see the value.

The taco is very capable if you set your expectations and drive the transmission/torque converter correctly.

Towed over 8,000 miles, over 65,000ft of elevation gain with no problems. The only time the taco struggles is up a grade into a 15mph headwind at 55mph, need that 3rd gear to lockup. Averaged 12mpg in total.

If they put the Turbo V6 (non hybrid) that is in the Tundra in the Tacoma, nobody is going to need to one up them, it still doesn't beat the Ranger.

I took a pair of 2x8’s and shaved them down in the mount area so they fit like a pair of 2x4’s. Easier to manage since it’s only 2 boards.

Also, I intend to do the tailgate leash mod where you add another clip point for the tailgate tethers that leaves the tailgate elevated, and at the same height of the 2x4 crossbeams. Three points of contact.

Exactly ford did it right. I sure hope they do. I forgot toyota has 3 version of the v6 with 358hp with 406tq on the base sr tundra. Hope the tacoma get that version.

I'd say there is a zero chance that an engine from the Tundra ends up under the Tacoma's hood.

All automatics are slush boxes! :p

Have been driving my 1G before it went into the shop for a new engine. Kinda miss driving a manual. Was considering trading in for a manual ACLB Sport, but now with the 4G on the horizon, going to wait and see.

The reason I don't want a daily driver as a manual...too much stop and go here . Plus I hate shifting when I'm holding a "pop" on a forest service rd lol

We do get traffic here, schedule my days to mostly avoid it. 75% of my commute are ranch roads, almost hit some ditch chickens on the way in this morning.

Baaaaah, have driven with my right clavicle broken before (twice) holding a beverage taint no problem!

“Pop” ha! Haven’t heard it call that since I lived in PA.

Thats awful. Not a fan of the tablet stuck to the dash look. Much prefer the screen integrated into the lines and flow of the dash.

Tell that to the modern dual clutch autos….

My Macan was stellar. I get what you’re talking about though…. Torque converter automatics.
