I don’t know a lot about geothermal.
But I do know soil type and land conditions can have a big effect. It depends on the system. Vertical or horizontal coil system, land size ect.

Like most things. Research will be required. Get a good competent, honest, installer. Not all systems are as efficient as others. The installer should be able to better help.

 

I think the concept sounds cool, but I only have a very superficial understanding of it. Maybe if I ever build a house I'll look into it.

 

It sounds like a good idea in theory, don't know anyone that has that setup to know how well it works though.

I vaguely recall watching a This Old House episode where they installed a geothermal system, the pipes they installed in the ground were plastic if l remember correctly.

 

I know what it is, I just don’t know enough to give you a good opinion.
I don’t foresee me ever having geothermal. Not that I’m against it. I just don’t know anything about, I like to stick with things I know about.

 

Earthquakes not fun. That’s enough of a reason to avoid geothermal for me.

 

I think it's a good idea but the installation costs are very high from what I've heard.

 

I would more or less agree, and would likely go with the tried and true when replacing a system or building a new house, but if a house I was looking at had a geothermal heat pump it would not be a dealbreaker...

 

But they last decades!

 

A house in a neighborhood near mine that was built about 20 years ago had the original Carrier air-conditioners replaced, unfortunately by Goodman units...

 

The new ones definitely wont last as long as the old ones.
