Dump the 5w-30 in and pretend the dealer did the change. Because the dealer is putting in bulk whatever they get cheapest. Truck isn't gonna know the difference. DO IT........and never look back.

How cold does it get in NE? I used syn 5w-30 in 20 below. What made it "not right"?

5w30 was fine in my gen1 tundra, even at -40 in northern quebec when I snowmobiled up there every winter. I'm living near the northwest border in connecticut, ma., and ny is. It can get to -10 or colder. I had changed my oil to 5w30 in the fall which the truck ran fine till one very cold spell during winter where it got to -14 one morning. I had to leave early for an appointment that morning...when I started the truck, it let out a loud groan I never heard before when 0w20 was in the truck. Everyday after that when it was warmer till now its been fine. I'm not going to run this oil next winter. 0w20 or something closer will be used.

You might want to be the one to look up tolerances lol...

It's actually mostly the same... Your motor has similar tolerances to an old 22RE(5w30 motor) from 30+ years ago.

Newer engines in general don't have "tighter tolerances" It's something people say when they don't know what they're talking about. Bearing clearances have been generally the same for 40 plus years depending on the manufacturer.

Thinner oil is used to gain MPG.

New Porche 911s call for 0w40...It's not about bearing tolerances...

All this arguing is stupid. 0w-20 and 5w-30 are not actually that different in viscosity at operating temperature, ~8.8 cst vs ~10.5 cst. Most 5w-30s at operating temp behave like most 0w-20s that haven’t quite gotten to operating temp yet. Both start heavier than 40 cst at most ambient temps, so every time you start your engine with 0w-20, it passes right on through the 5w-30 range, behaving like a 5w-30 when engine engine is almost warmed up. So anyone thinking 5w-30 will cause issues is likely wrong.

However, most engine wear (something like 80% iirc) occurs in the first 20 min after startup, even when it’s warm outside. Lighter oil at ambient temp is better able to protect against this wear, especially the cooler it is outside. So anyone thinking 5w-30 will always prevent more wear than 0w-20 is likely wrong.

Unless you’re a Toyota engineer, you cannot make any assertions about what’s universally good for these engines, unless you can get official supporting documentation. The manual says 0w-20. There’s no evidence that using 0w-20 is always worse than anything else. There are plenty of stellar UOAs for the 2GR-FKS engine on 0w-20. If you want to run 5w-30, go for it, it might be slightly better if you always take long trips in hot temps, maybe, but don’t make claims you cannot support.

For those considering 5w-30, maybe try a 0w-30 like Amsoil or lighter 5w-30 like PUP in summer. But be careful thinking the heavier oils are always better.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
I stick with the Toyota OEM on all fluids after experiencing the alternative.

Our climate in winter gets down to -15f in winter and as high as +110f summers. Plus in summer I drive weekly from 1,000ft elevation to 6,500ft with about 1,000 pounds of gear in the back. Retired, so a lot of off road fishing trips from Spring to Fall months.

A third party recommended mechanic said better to run heavier engine oil in the Tacoma, and also on the front and rear diff and transfer case.

So I went along. What a mistake that was. The truck drove like a slug crawling through mud, absolutely horrible. After a month I drained those out and put the OEM back in. What a difference, the truck ran so good again. I was shocked at how poorly it ran with the heavier oils. Performance wise with a slightly heavier engine oil, it just dragged when under load. That surprised me.

I have put OEM fluids in for 4.5 years now, and have 70K miles on it, with about 18K of that hard off roading. I tried the experiment and it failed miserably in my usage scenario.

So the OEM engine oil runs pretty good for my type of driving.

I find your experience interesting. Not doubting you, but I’m genuinely curious and also confused. Didn’t you have a thread where the shop put 75W-140 in your diffs and t-case without you knowing, and you were asking if it was safe on here? And if I recall, after a few weeks you were leaving it because it was running fine….

Did the above scenario happen at a different time than the time with the mechanic’s rec including the engine oil change? Just curious….I have thicker oil in “all the things” and there is no additional sluggishness whatsoever so I do find that part surprising.

yea, not sure why we can't use portable nuclear reactors for our trucks. seems to work on ships and remote bases.

They only list the 0W-20, but 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30 all fit in the upper left box description. So that’s why. 15W-40 is officially not in the “energy-conserving” category so it’s in its own line. Those 5 viscosities are the ones in the Mexico manual which are the 5 supported oils for the 2GR.

Hmmm, curious hey, it seems we have a detective in our midst…. :)

Yup, that was me and yes I was wondering if it was safe. Yup, it was fine toodling (doodling?) about the city, but not so fine after a few trips driving it under load. Glad I found out before I ran it longer in the truck. From that experience, I would never go back to the heavier oils in the Tacoma. If mucking about on the flats with no load it might be just fine.

Like this? Ladies and germs, I present to you the Ford Nucleon. It goes from 0 to nuclear meltdown in the flick of a cigarette butt.

Once there are a million of these on the road, worries about nuclear meltdown will be irrelevant.
