Let me start by saying this is the third Toyota 4X4 product I have had. I know the 4x4 system can be finicky to engage.

We of a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off Road that we have driven literally thousands of miles off road (total mileage is 92,000). We went out for a back road trip and could not get four wheel drive to engage. Tried to put in two wheel and four wheel several times. Turned the truck off and on several times. Unplugged and plugged in the actuator. Checked the fuse. Nothing worked.

We were out just two weeks ago and was fine.

Has this happened to anyone else. Have any ideas?

Check out this @ClassyTacos vid. It could be any number of things but duder walks you through the most common problem and things you can do to fix or replace. His channel and Tinkerer's Garage on YouTube are solid sources of information for mods and fixes IMO.

Mines finicky. It likes to be moving slightly to engage 4wd. I assume it’s to get splines in the hubs to line up but I don’t know.

Yeah. I tried all the tricks…didn’t work. I just got the flashing green light. It didn’t care what I did.

Mines never been finicky, and no one I know has been. Only issues I’ve read are people that don’t understand it’s best to be moving under no load, and no turning the front wheels,, or have shorted out the actuator from deep water crossings.

Which makes it more finicky than other SOTF 4wd trucks I’ve owned. That’s all I meant, not that it was broken or something.

They can be finicky compared to other 4x4. I have literally driven close to 400,000 miles in several Toyota 4x4’s. We are off road 2 to 3 times a month, usually anywhere from 25 to 300 miles a trip. This is the first time it refused to go in four wheel drive. But, they can be slow and a little stubborn.

i watched the video posted above. it was very informative and if i had to, i could do that work myself. but, i was very surprised at the small moving parts and how delicate it looks. wow!

Same here not caring whether under power or not, you just turn the knob and its in 4wd...same for disengaging. Its hard to believe how smooth, and quiet the operation is compared to my gen1 tundra, that felt like the chassis was falling apart every time 4wd was to be engaged.

Have to fight mine every time I use it. A lot my be my fault because I don't excesses it enough there is no reason you can't, even on the hard top click it in drive a mile or two do it again. I never had any problem locking in hubs or shifting levers on my old ones lazy mans toy. Oh another plus they didn't spin the axles when driving!
