@taco terror - The 5VZ was also final design the VZ engine family, which started the mid 80s. It did have a lot of new advancements for the day, but a family history of trial and error. I think the 2.0 & 2.5 units had crankshaft failures and head gasket failures, and we all know but the truck 3.0 and camry 3.0 had head gasket failures.
AND the first couple of years the 5VZ had head gasket recalls regardless of where the engine was made in Japan (4Runner - Tahara, T100 Hamura, Tokyo - Hino Plant) or NUMMI in California. Its kinda crazy to think that after 10 years of production and design, each iteration had some form of major problem that carried through.

I don't know about y'all but so many times I looked on ebay or autotrader, I see so many 5VZs that are running hot in the photos. Head gasket failure?

With that being said, I've heard that Toyota made the blocks to handle 900 HP, does anyone know if that is true?
I've also heard that the a stock 5VZ can 12 PSI of boost with no problem, but 16 PSI is where it'll give up the ghost (on stock internals). Since the T24A is built with forced induction in mind, wouldn't Toyota want to specify block around 900 HP For longevity sake?

At the same time, I'm sure Toyota was trying to everything to increases sales. who knows? It seems Toyota relies on older/proven technology but also uses newer stuff without fanfare.
I don't want to the think about them, one day old and busted, next day new hotness. I guess it all goes back to marketing.

@Plasmech - IF your truck is an automatic, Toyota gave the 2nd gen 5AT pretty good gearing along with 3.73 rear end- that helps I'm sure. I've never been in a 1GR powered truck, just going off of the spec charts. I also think the T24A will be more than plenty stock, and quite a blast with a tune.

The V35A, 10AT, & 3.31 in the Tundra moves 3 tons fairly well. I wonder of Toyota will give the Tacoma 3.31 rear end or 3.55/3.73 or made a more Toyota traditional 3.58/3.91? 3.31 would give better MPGs and that is the name of the game now.

The 2GR-FKS in the 3G has loads more power than any of my previous Toyotas, it is a rocket ship in comparison. Really more than enough than I need, however I drive slow (whatever the speed limit is) and like to take my time getting up to speed, definitely not one of the boy speed racer types. It is where the power is available, be nice if it was lower in the rpm range for us slow guys, for when it is loaded down and/or towing and not have to ring its neck. Sure, after driving Toyotas for 30+ years I am used to their higher revving engines, but for the prices these things command it needs a more truck like engine. Kinda burns a little seeing the overseas market get the perfect engines for these trucks, 3.0 diesel. The non-def versions have 500,000 mile service interval, sign me up!

Guess a turbo gasser will do, looking forward to it.

I hope the moonroof/sunroof is a stand alone option and that you can get the premium pkg with leather etc without a glass roof

Thats interesting! I didn't notice your locale when I posted.

Every body on frame pickup in the states offers a RWD only option. I live in Montana so we rarely get them here, but some companies still use them as fleet vehicles.

It's interesting how Canada and the states get different options. The Frontier I just bought was a trim only offered in CA, so I had to wait for one to show up down here used rather than buy new.

Hawaii gets different options too. They got the Tacoma and 4Runner in a limited 1919 Waialua edition celebrating 100 years of Servco (Hawaii’s Toyota dealer not Toyota USA). It was Voodoo Blue, sr5, 2wd only, with limited wheels and a pro grill in 2019 when voodoo blue was only available on the Pro on the mainland.

That would be nice. I wanted the moonroof but really didn’t want leather seats. Packages where you have to take everything suck.

On Oahu at least, most are better off with a 2wd.

I dunno. In 16 years I needed 4wd 0 times. A pickup bed I used at least once a week. Not sure there is a better spot for a 2wd open bed pickup truck. Maybe Florida?

Imagine how dumb I felt getting a double cab short bed instead of an access cab long bed to get the 6MT in an OR configuration, and then leather and sunroof just to get heated seats..they know enough people will suck it up and buy loaded trucks to make it worth while vs. making a bunch of different configurations (or heaven forbid, allowing custom builds!).

Of course they offer what I want in Canadia. I have wondered how much of a hit I would take trying to swap trucks over the Round Bacon Border.

Toyota has a patent on a simulated manual for EVs and hybrids. This might be the manual in the 2024 Tacoma.

If it isn’t a full on 1450 class, probably pretty boring. ;) :D

I don't get why it's such an odd time. It was supposed to be at the Overlanding event in Arizona, and that is still 10:30 PM there. It's like they don't want people to see it.

Wonder what the Hawaii tie in would be? I'm thinking of sustainable materials used in the trucks, cleaner engines for sure. Environmental tie in? Hmmmm
