Who here knows the meaning of the word Tercel?

No, not the Toyota Tercel


It means a male hawk or falcon.
Ter: Latin for three or third.

Tercels are more or less a third smaller than females.

 

I think I have seen these at altitude. How big are they? Take down deer?!

Significantly and noticeably bigger than a Baldie.
But not much heavier... Bald Eagles are comparatively stocky.

Bald Eagles flap their wings more, while Goldens tend more to soaring on updrafts.

Like I said, I've only seen one for certain, but I may have seen high flying ones from time to time.
And I mean high.
With not great hunting binoculars I couldn't be certain I wasn't looking at a turkey vulture.
Way way high.
