Anytime rear camera schematic?

Can anyone point me to where to find the schematic showing how to DIY the anytime rear camera?

Not long after I bought my 3rd gen Tacoma (3 years ago), I also purchased a switch for the rear camera mod. At the time, I also had a simple hand drawn schematic, pulled from info on this forum.

I’ll have a few un-booked hours this weekend and would like to get this modification done, but have since mis-placed the schematic drawing.

If memory serves, the anytime rear camera mod is as simple as providing a +12v source via a switch to a certain pin on the head unit connector.

This is for second gen. I'm not 100% sure it's the same on 3rd gen.

 

from memory: there is a wire named "R" or Rev" on one of the plugs at the back of the head unit. you just need to apply +12 to that with the switch.
It normally only has +12 on it when the truck is in reverse. I don't have time to find the schematic but I am pretty sure it is posted here somewhere.
It is a pretty trivial mod. You will have to tap the interior fuse block for the +12. there is a nice way to do that by plugging in a wire contraption that accepts the existing fuse and also gives you a fused +12 to use.

Does this allow for a switchable rear cam versus rear trailer cam? For example, when towing and the trailer has a rear camera, the existing tailgate camera is useless so why not have a switch that switches between the cams? With the "always on" mod that would be perfect to towing.

 

that sounds analogous to adding a front anytime camera. there are plug and play harness solutions for doing such. it is a lot more complicated
than just telling the head unit to activate the camera. you need to switch video signals etc. not rocket science but well beyond scope
of what OP was asking. search TW for front and rear anytime camera threads.

 

I don't want to buy a new harness or kit, nor do I want a front camera.

I just need to know, on the stock 3rd gen head unit connector, which pin needs a switched +12 added to use the rear camera when the truck is not in reverse. My understanding is it's the same pin for the reverse light signal. I'll be adding a small diode to the reverse light signal wire to prevent back feeding. FWIW, this is only to keep an eye on my small 4'x8' trailer.

 

the front camera suggestion (front analogous to rear trailercam) was meant for trailer guy NorrinRadd. you both have trailers? hurting my head.
i am unfamiliar with reverse light signal. if you want head unit to display what is on the video signal wire, pin #2 is the one.

 

You'd require a relay to switch the feeds at the bumper connection and a plug for when you have no towing to do.
Something like this:

If you don't have the front camera or don't want it, mod to only one relay to choose tailgate or trailer.

If you use a SPDT switch, you don't need the diode to decouple REV from the rest of the truck when applying +12 to Pin #2.
I have seen diodes fail in other projects. Rare but it happens.
And diode fwd bias typically drops voltage by 0.7 V.

Nice getting +12 from nearby pin 1.

 

In my view, allowing the OEM reverse signal function when selected makes an added switch an interference.

 

not sure what you mean. maybe i was not clear. i think this is less intrusive to OEM. please forgive artistic failings

 

That would require an ON/ON switch type. The aftermarket switch most have purchased are the ON/OFF/ON type, so that at OFF -OEM takes over.
The cat can be skinned in so many different ways...

 

i guess one should use whatever switch one has. i used a simple toggle discreetly placed. not integrated into dashboard cosmetics.
i think it is a good thing to reduce the number of components and not modify REV with fwd bias voltage drop of the diode.

Thanks again for all the input. I was able to get the project done today, but there might be a problem I'll get to that in a moment.

FWIW, putting a diode in as Caribe detailed is necessary. Without it, when to put +12v to pin #2, your backup light illuminate. Also, if you accidentally put the diode in backwards, just sayin', your backup lights will also illuminate.

Now the potential problem. Once back together, my CEL and TRAC OFF are lit up. Fortunately, the truck goes to the dealership tomorrow for an oil change. Maybe when the reset the system to make the maintenance needed soon triangle disappear, the other issues will reset too. I got lazy and pulled the dash light power from a bed light switch I put in a while ago. Maybe that's what triggered the CEL and TRAC lights. Another possibility, although remote may have to do with the wireless charge switch. I don;t use the wireless charger, so I used the spot for the rear camera switch. I just disconnected the wireless charger switch and pushed the plug inside the dash.

 

The diode is only necessary if you use a SPST switch, as in Caribe Makaira's diagram. If you use a SPDT switch, as in pdxTacoSR5's diagram, it is completely unnecessary. dead horse.
I would not tell dealer you just did some nonstandard wiring. You may not have caused the problems but that will give them an out they probably should not have, assuming some problem does exist. Mention a diode and all hell will break loose.

edit: I happened to look back thru thread and noticed post #3 by cmbondo also used a SPDT switch but I think we all ignored it (at least I did) since it was for Gen 2. Other useful stuff in that diagram too but don't know if applies directly to Gen 3.

 

To close this out . . . the C.E.L. & "TRAC OFF" are both off. I guess when the dealer reset the "Maintenance Required Soon" indicator, it rest the error lights too.
