On a new 4L V6 Access cab. I was at the dealer thismorning and asked the parts counter how much for a new key(with the chip) and how much to program it. The guy sid $45 for the key plus 1 hour labor (minimum). So the whole caper with tax at this particular dealer is about $150. Of course the key is no good without the programing. Is this what you guys are paying. I have the two programed keys that came with the truck. I've read that this is a dealer thing, so I probably should shop around if I want the third key .Thanks. Mark S.

What do you need the 3rd key for if you don't mind me asking? You can get one with out a chip to unlock the doors, you can use it to turn the ignition to Aux and to on, just won't start it.

Check your local ACE hardware... they sell the key with programing for $69 (at least here that is the price). Works fine just doesn't have the Toyota logo on it.

Thanks guys. If I can loose something, I will. So better to get the extra one now before I have to go for the new one without the masters. Thanks for the heads up about ACE hardware.

I've been told close to $300 when I've asked around. I only got one with mine and one copy to unlock that doesn't have a chip.

My local ACE isn't that sophisticated yet, but I noticed the locksmith now claims to be up to the task.

That seems like a waste. Why not wait to see if you loose one in the first place? Got money to burn?

I wouldn't stick an unchipped key in the ignition.Fine for the locks.

UNchipped key sounds totally useless, unless you happened to lock your keys in the truck.

OP, you don't need the original keys to have replacements cut, they can duplicate your key with the VIN (only at the dealer, of course). If a replacement key was $3.00 then great. But upwards of $150 for the sake of "what if"? Invest in a better key ring and be careful with it.

that price sounds about right for dealership. I bought three keys on ebay, OEM keys from a dealer in San Diego, had them cut locally, then programmed at my local dealer. Wound up paying 170 for all three. If you think you'll ever need more than one spare, get them all at the same time and save that programming fee.

the chipped key doesnt need to be in the actual ign to start it just real close, so get spares made unchipped and zip tie the chipped key up under the dash.

I Got three chipped keys with mine. 2 black,1 grey. I thought the gray one was not chipped, but it started the truck when turned. Also have the little tag with the key code on it.

im pretty sure it has to be in the ignition or a chip in the key would be pointless

It does not hurt anything. It just won't start the truck, you can turn it to start but nothing. I keep an unchipped key in my wallet, a key without the plastic on it, just flat metal. So I always have a key with me if I lock mine inside. When I'm at work, I don't like to to keep my keys in my pocket cause its to bulky, I lock them in my locker. So sometime when I'm outside on lunch and say its a warm day, I might want to crack the windows so I have my key in my wallet, open the door, turn it to on, and I can crack my windows. Works out great for me.

The gray is a valet key. It's meant to do everything but unlock your glove compartment.

Which never made any sense to me, being that there is no lock on the glove box!

Makes me glad I don't have chipped keys. I got a copy of mine from Ace for less than two dollars to put in my wallet (cut off a bit on both sides to make it low profile). I haven't done it much, but I've locked myself out enough to have one on me.
